V Tail Mixer and ESC Setup
« on: August 22, 2015, 06:35:30 pm »

Hi,

I'm considering installing a V tail mixer in my tug instead of the usual 2 x ESCs and mixer setup so that I can use rudder steering only for basic manoeuvring and mixed steering only when I need to turn in tight circles.

My question are: 1) do I need one or two ESCs, and 2) where does the ESC (or ESCs) go - between the Rx and V tail unit, or between the V tail unit and the motors?

If anyone can point me towards a wring diagram I'd be grateful too.

Thanks

John

Since nobody has yet found a convenient method of mixing ESC outputs, the mixing always happens before the controller.  Whatever type of mixer, it takes a single output for speed from the RX and mixes it with a steering channel before feeding it out to the two motor controls having logically combined and split the signals.
As this has been posted in the brushless section, it should be noted that generally, one ESC per motor is needed anyway.

Thanks for the reply - I understand the basic idea now.

I posted it in the brushlesss section by mistake (could a mod move it, please?). Would I still need two ESCs for brushed motors.

The clue is in the word "mix". Unless you have a speed controller for each motor then you have no way of making them run at different speeds/directions.

Thanks for that, DM. It makes sense when you think about it!
