Suppressers
« on: August 18, 2015, 02:18:51 pm »

For years I have been using Action suppresser kits on my brushed motors.   Now all my boats operate on 2.4GHz, is it really necessary to use all 3 capacitors, or can I just use one across the motor terminals?   Pete

I'd recommend fitting the one 0.1-0.22uF ceramic capacitor across the motor terminals to minimise the effect of spikes of back-EMF which can screw up your ESC and receiver, irrespective of what frequency you use. You can buy them quite cheaply on Fleabay. I just searched for "ceramic capacitors" and found 10 x 0.1uF for 99p with free postage.

I still fully suppress motors even though running on 2.4 giggy thingies.
Several of my club members still run 40 and 27 mega thingies.
I've always assumed that sparking motors could affect another boats signal.
I stand to be educated/corrected but I take no chances of my motors' sparks interfering with the control of their 'pride and joy' models.
However, I now ask the question 'Need I bother with other than what Dave said about Back-EMF ?'

Me, too. Force of habit, perhaps, but why would you do otherwise? As you say, the RFI from your motor might just affect someone else's radio. It's neither the most expensive or time-consuming job to fit two little 0.01uFs while you're soldering up the other one and the motor wiring to the terminals.

You are both right, of course, we still have one or two club members on 27 or 40.   Should have thought about the others.   Pete

Use all 3 - always! Just because you are on 2.4GHz it doesn't mean you wont have problems - noise on the power supply can upset the receiver even if it doesn't affect the radio signal.
