Very long shot, anyone flying to the US will probably have luggage to their limit and run the gauntlet with customs and security flying the moulds home.

For that sort of price you might as well fly over, have a holiday and bring them back yourself.

Surely someone could sea freight them for less than £500, might take a month but it's bulk, not weight for those moulds.

A member recently sent a large model to the States
using a company that utilises excess space on the
global carriers.
There might be a reciprocal arrangement.
Can't find the thread but I remember it was very
cheap and very quick.
Not sure but Inertia might have known the company.

You may find that the US Post Office International Parcel rate is very competitive and a lot cheaper than the couriers and is trackable.

Just a thought.

Is this a two part mold?
Will it ship in two boxes 20" x 40" x 12"?

(as long as you aren't dealing with Rick P. the deal should be fine)

The carriers are hitting with higher fees because of the size. You get hit for weight and volume, especially for unusually large packages.  I am not sure if you would even be allowed to check this in as carry on with an airline.
There are many carriers who use spare shipping container space.

Just a thought, If you were to put the item in a case, across the diagonals, it might come into a smaller classification (40x30x12 and a bit), even though the box is now bigger.

40x40x12 is all but 10 cu ft a shipping tonne is 40 cu ft so you are actually being quoted for 500 lb dead weight.

I read of a  trick that some US modellers use to get their yachts transported by air for free, this is to use the "sporting equipment" allowance that airlines give.  That is they pack their boats into a case of some sort then include one of the class of sporting gear that airlines give free checked baggage allowance for e.g a fishing rod.

As I am going to New York in early October, I have been looking at Virgin's baggage allowances and they do the same for a range of sporting goods, the only restriction appearing to be a weight of 23Kg. No size restriction mentioned. Have a look here

I've imported two submarine hulls from the States, never cost anything like £500, and they weren't tiny either.

To send it from here to the USA, assuming dimensions can be kept within 100cm, I was getting quotes of about £20-30, assuming 2kg weight (shouldn't be very heavy).
