New and bewildered !! electric power - Help!
« on: September 07, 2015, 08:57:49 pm »

Hi I am currently building a Vic Smeed Musketeer - 29"" Long 9""Beam (very loosely based on an off shore racer) originally rated up to a 6.5cc glow engine (in the late 1960's)

My apologies first off as there is much on the forum regarding motor selection - I have spent what must now be a couple of hours reading but still cannot determine Motor/esc/prop selection - I am now confused and seek help please

I am not looking for out and out performance (the model is a 1960's design and therefore has it's limitations) but brisk would be good
As far as I can see it would suit an outrunner - I would prefer to use Lipos
Any suggestions please on motor/esc and prop combination would be gratefully received (Hobbyking have their warehouse close to me, I believe I can collect from there - if that is something suitable is recommended and suits)

I accept that once up and running there may need to be changes in respects of the prop - but a starting point would be great

Thanks in anticipation and apologies for what to many is a much repeated question/request

Welcome right just googled it and it seems a very fast boat so personally I would be looking at a Graupener 700b turbo with a 2 bladed prop of around 40-55mm as a start

:-)) For a fast boat like this brushless is the answer,I would go for 650kv motor and 120amp esc with 14.8v lipo battery say 5000mah and 50mm-55mm prop and this little baby will go fast enough for this old design, looks an interesting project might dabble myself so let us know how you get on..........Ray. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Thanks for advice  :-)

Now sifting through all the numbers detailed for different motors - still bewildered   :embarrassed:
Now another question !

Can I use a brushless outrunner for designed aircraft use in the boat without cooling ?

Thanks again

:-)) I use outrunners in all my boats and have never needed water cooling on them as the cases act like a fan,if you use car ESCs you will not need it on that either that way you keep it all simple, hope this helps....Ray. :-))

I put a 3648-1450kv brushless motor,100A car ESC,4S Lipo battery 5800 mah 60C and 40mm x 1.4mm alloy prop. in my boat.
All from Hobbyking.
It's equally as fast a 6.5cc IC motor!!!
