1/72 HMS Dreadnought Ballasting and Propulsion Trials
« on: August 01, 2015, 02:48:58 pm »

As most of the work is now done (final fitting out still to go, aft stanchions, torpedo net + brailings and awning supports) but it is time for ballasting and propulsion trails!! Cold feet in the pool (bought specifically for this purpose) but worth it! Bollard pull (well, push against my hands) is awesome, speed will be over the top but good to have some in reserve! With the twin motor controls it is also manoeuvrable at slow / full stop. It's taken some 8 years to get here but I can finally see the end, and I am SOOOOOO looking forward to going up to Inverleith Pond (Edinburgh) and sailing with the club (where I've been a member for over 5 year, but not sailed....)
Some of you may notice the funny angles on the bow and stern flagstaffs, but that is because I bumped them when I put it in the pool before it was full enough (impatience on my part!), I should have had another cup of coffee and waited...... This is my 1st RC scratch build ever, and my first real RC ship since I was 14 (so over 25 years), thoughts?????

Finally, 2 very shaky videos on Youtube here (difficult to use the Tx and camera at once isn't it??)

Blimey...nice. First scratch build eh? I think we hate you :}

Are the net booms designed to deploy, they kind of look like the could? Also nice to see the inside of the boat painted. Very very tidy, would you like to join the Display Team?!

Hi, torpedo nets I thought about deploying, but then decided not to, but they are rigged correctly (partly now, and will be when done), and I thought I best paint the inside white, as even with the superstructure off, and turrets removed there is a lot is dark space inside, I wanted to make sure I could see any water coming in and see the motors etc.... Thanks for the comments!!

What a beauty she is  :-)) I've been toying with the idea of my next build being a dreadnought or a pre-dreadnought, this has given me food for thought.

Lovely - and well done for winning that mental marathon. Eight years? Mine is older, and much less finished.

What are the motors?

Thanks for the comments, to answer the questions:

Andy, I'm using Mega Mig 600 12v motors (four off) http://www.puffinmodels.com/product.php?prod=1928  transmitting power via double universal couplings and 330mm Raboesch Waterproof Propshafts finally to WWII pattern props from Prop Shop (closest I could find to the original items, with the long bosses)

Littoralcombat, I could post pics here but there are loads (some 250) from the entire build on my photostream on flickr here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/irons01/sets/72157623194610246  possibly better to look there that have me pick out pics and post here.....  :-))

As you are also a babe of '76, I applaud you for devoting so much of your life to building this gorgeous ship. She is a bobby dazzler and I hope you have more like her in line to be built:O)

Took your suggestion up Sandy, and attended the EMBC regatta (an awesome day), here are some pics of the Dreadnought sailing (albeit not quite finished), even so I was very very fortunate in winning best boat in the regatta (surprised and very happy about this). Fortunately I think the judging happened before I crashed into the dock and wiped out the torpedo net booms on the fwd stb side....... entirely my driving at fault, and something I really really need to work on....... whoops, planning to fix them in the next week.

Anyway, enjoy the pics, thanks to Douglas Kinloch for taking them!

Mmmmmm, She is absolutly gorgeous! You definitly deserved your accolade for the work and resulting model.

I am sorry to hear about the damage caused to the booms and hope they can be repaired without too much effort. Perhaps in the future, hanging a six foot length of timber alongside the lakeside to act as a scale wharf edge will [revent this sort of thing hapening in the future as I cannot think of another way of preventing it even with slow speed approaches because the hull will still scrape.

Stunning work!! Pity about the damage, but that's always the risk with working models as opposed to static I guess. I'd much rather take the risk to see them in their natural environment. Good Work!!

Fabulous build.  Well done  :-))

Having several period warships with varying amounts of vulnerable overhanging detail, and a lake edge similar to the one you used, I have learned the hard way that coming alongside is probably the trickiest manoeuvre to be undertaken.  Being such a large ship makes it even more challenging.
As you undoubtedly know the ideal is to stop just parallel.

A good mixer system and an oversized rudder certainly helps.  Contact damage is so annoying. I have the T shirt as they say.  Hope you get it fixed OK.   More piccy's when you do please  :-))

Congratulations on her first major watering Ian.......in reality, ships of these Classes would have spent very little time along side as bunker/coaling, watering, vetchling, crewing and other loading functions would have taken place at anchor

Don't be too hard on the helmsman or Captain.......model warships were never designed to compete in steerage courses  >>:-( or berth without the aid of tugs...

Just let her sail gracefully at the scale speed for the enclosed waters she is operating in  :-)) .......

Yes....there  are some great images in those 259 photographs in your WEB page.......Derek

What a fabulous model!  I was admiring it today at the Federation Model Boat Show at Summerlee.  Fantastic detail but scarily delicate for a working model, but just beautiful.  But you must have a lorry to transport her in, as length and height wouldn't fit in my car anyway!  A joy to see such a ship however!

What you need is some of those rubber tubes they use for fending ships off the sides of quaysides - but to scale and weighted to float just below the stuff that would get damaged when a pesky - I mean perkasa does a full run past creating an enormous wake  :} you know the rubber bouys that look like suppositories  %%

Good plan, I've also thought about a long length of pipe foam insulation (the sort of grey foam that you get from B&Q to clip over hot water pipes to keep the heat in), with a length of rope through it can be tied to the quayside and act as a buffer,,,,, bought but not yet tested!
