Major improvement, well for me
« on: September 15, 2015, 04:20:25 pm »

Well this morning I've gone from a non swimmer to 4 1/2 widths, amazing what you can do on holiday (tbh not in one go ) but I am chuffed, my brother will be embarrassed he can swim like a fish. I must also admit I'm knackered for the rest of the day.

Well done sir!   O0

..... some of better boats won't do 4 1/2 widths!

Swimming is one of life's great achievements - once learned, never forgotten

....it could save your life one day, or someone else's for that matter.

So, well done friend. :-))

Regards,

Ray.

Thanks guys, need a lot more practice but I think I could like this new activity. Don't know how my missus and the friends we came with manage to do lengths and lengths. I was put off for years as I tried in my teens and someone jumped in and dragged me to the side as they thought I was drowning, they had the best of intentions but I thought if my attempts are that bad I must look like a right numpty, I was so embarrassed, I told our friends and they asked how I swam and I showed me the breast stroke and I've not looked back, my only problem now is I can only swim for as long as I can hold my breath, which is why I can't do a width in one go.

Bit of a disadvantage.   ok2

Try staying afloat and not going anywhere to practice breathing.  In the shallow end to start with.

Cheers

Stick your head back - ears under. It'll bring your feet up.

As to breathing, try swimming on your back...leg kicks like the front crawl, and arms doing a sort of breast stroke. You can breathe all you like, and keep going all day. (But you do bump into things).

I can't swim at all..I don't float. Both my late brother and I couldn't float...twice I've nearly drowned through that. Once at school swimming lessons (Teacher asked 'can you swim'..I replied 'no'...teacher said 'now's your chance to learn' and pushed me in. I woke up in hospital...
Another time I fell in a local river whilst fishing, luckily a friend saw me in trouble and grabbed my hair, and managed to pull me to shallower water.

Ever since the school episode I've never been able to take a bath, I always take a shower every day. Caused a bit of friction once when I was in hospital, and the doctor told me I was to take a salt bath...

Mate of mine from kindergarten thru to high school attained his Australian Surf Bronze Medallion @ the age of 15 & became an OZ Life Saver :-))

Joined the Commonwealth Bank after school......then worked on a few Cunard liners [in the casino's money exchanges] between UK & New York.......

He then worked as a Life Guard & indoor pool swimming teacher in London ....yes teaching Poms how to float  {-) ....... Derek

Likewise, I am not one of life's swimmers. I did manage to swim with a float by the age of eleven but they are quite bulky to carry around!
