« on: September 18, 2015, 12:36:23 am »

As the subject title suggests - I need to remove Humbrol Enamel paint from brass fittings, will a soaking in a bath of White Spirit do the job ?

Hullo Ray......I don't think white spirit will help....nor would clear spirit [Vodka]   :o

You could soak the brass fittings in any commercially available paint stripper....it will not have any effect on the brass base metal......however the same cannot be said if used on aluminium  <*<.....

This process is one where those second hand tooth brushes become invaluable  :-))...... Derek

I just stripped a whole house lot of hinges coated with enamel, a soak overnight in a pot of automotive paint thinners and 95% of the paint had fallen off by the morning.

B&Q in the plumbing section, look for a tub of caustic soda crystals. Add some crystals to warm water, NOT water to crystals! Soak for an hour and the paint will rinse off. Make sure you use rubber gloves and if we go the whole PPE (personal protective equipment) eye protection also.

Caustic soda is used in a lot of commercial stripping of paint, places where you take your house doors, tables etc for dipping in tanks.

Thank you to all for the advice - I've got a number of parts to strip so I'll try a few with each method mentioned and report back with which worked best.  :-))
