BECC Flags - which adhesive?
« on: September 19, 2015, 01:50:30 pm »

I've just taken delivery of a very nice BECC Red Ensign. I've never handled one of these before and I wondered if anyone who has could advise me on the type of adhesive they used to paint round the edges and glue up the front edge. The instructions mention "fabric or multi-purpose" adhesives but that covers a multitude of things, some of which I wouldn't allow anywhere near a four quid flag!

I used a few coats of matt varnish to seal and copydex to stick to staff.

Dave, there's an adhesive used by dressmakers to stop the edges of material from fraying. I can't remember what it's called, but your wife may know - or you could call into your local fabric shop and ask yourself :-)  I have used it and it works fine, dries clear and does not affect the appearance of the flag.

Thanks, Peter. Job now jobbed and Huntress 23 should be getting wet for the first time in about ten hours from now. Fingers crossed!

John
There are several photos (minus the flag) on "The Other Forum" here. http://www.modelboats.co.uk/albums/member_photo.asp?a=38200&p=624516
It was a bright, clear and calm morning at Papplewick today so I got there early and threw caution to the wind and H23 into the water. She sails as well as she looks, although I didn't take my camera this time.
The next job is to firm up the parts shapes and build a second "proving" model. That's always a pleasure because I know it will all come together well at the end.
