Windows 7
« on: September 21, 2015, 04:40:56 pm »

Would any of you kind gentlemen have a copy of Windows 7 which they would be willing to lend me, please? I had to have my laptop sorted out a while back after it suffered a hissy fit and deleted itself...the guy that sorted it out for me installed a rip off copy of W7, and it's continually giving me all sorts of stick...I need to reinstall a full legitimate copy of W7. And of course...I haven't got one. I tried installing W XP...wouldn't have it. I tried installing Linux Mint...wouldn't have it. I even tried downloading W10...it got so far, but because my laptop has a naughty copy of W7, it blocked it.

I will, of course, pay all postage costs incurred, and whoever lends me a copy, I'll donate a tenner to their favourite charity.

I think you need to specify which version you're looking for to match the original CoA sticker on the laptop.
Win7 Basic, Home, Pro, 32 or 64bit?

Err...umm...Windows 7 Home. I think...it doesn't say anything about whether it's 32 or 64 bit?

What brand of laptop you got? If it's a Dell, Linux can be a pain to install.
I managed to install Ubuntu on a Dell but it wouldn't do it on a reboot. I managed to do it
from the live disc.

No need for all that nonsense. Go to microsoft website and download your version, it is free! All you need is the serial number for the copy that was installed on your puter - this will written on a sticker somewhere, usually underneath of a laptop or the back of desktop.

Microsoft currently offer this service for Win 7//8/10

If in doubt just google the link. I know because I did this for a friend a couple week ago.

Failed...miserably. Because my laptop is running an illegal version of W7, I can't download anything.

Time to put a hammer through the damn thing,methinks...

Failing that let me know the make and model number and I can probably find you a full set of recovery disks

If you want to go to W10 do a full clean install of W10 and you can then register it using your old W7 serial number

if its dodgy that may be causing all the issues, a software is usually tied to the motherboard when it talks to MS so they know when a dodgy copy is installed in a different pc, best option is that stated, to install a fresh copy of an OS, where the hard drive has been wiped completely so its like installing on a brand new never been used piece of hardware.

my win 7 was bought of e bay - I know problematic - but the site supplied a genuine sticker etc, its just a disk - funny thing is that they say you can come and collect one of the pc's its related to, and a picture of a million stacked pc's, it installed fine and I have no doubt that it is genuine - was about £50.00.

mmmmmmmmmmm Rich......Microsoft software licencing laws can be problematic....in October 2014 I purchased a licenced copy of MS Publisher and installed it on my downstairs HP desktop.....attempted an install to my Toshiba ultrabook using WIFI upstairs 20 minutes later only to be told I had exceeded concurrent installations even though the IP address was the identical one

Microsoft software [for domestic use] is for a single installation.....which means you can install it on one PC a hundred times if using the same original IP address, but not two PC's in the same IP address location.....however a ten minute talk with one of Mr Gates henchmen  <*< followed and all was finally OK with the second installation

So your IP address and machines signature would naturally be different to any other where a previous version of the W7 was installed & Mr Gates will know this when you attempt the new installation & this will cause issues

I think the scenario suggested by warspite is the best way to go :-)) .....

BTW..it is easy to determine which version of W7 you have installed by going to ...

my PC, select the C drive go to properties then to driver......the select driver details ..& by example my ultrabook is System/32 bit......Derek

I think in the end the licence for software extends only from a motherboard (the big green flat thing that the processor is plug into and all the other resistors and plug in rails) and the processor, both have a unique number and that is what it is applied against, i dont think the ip address comes into it, for autocad fo instance in the past the company bought two individual seats, a software disk for each, for two seperate pc's that we were using, the licence stipulated that each licence can allow you to load to the main place of work, and an additional loading to a home computer only if it can be attributed to the company, the same cannot be said for the OS - its a one machine load, though if you change the hard disk they will allow it to be transfered as long as its still attached to the same motherboard and processor.

Thanks for all the assistance and offers of help, guys...I did try once more to sort the thing out, but to no avail. I'm renowned for my lack of  patience with computers, so the damn thing suffered a grisly end...I put it on the floor and stamped on it.

RIP, Toshiba Satellite...
