revell 1.96 scale cutty sark
« on: September 01, 2015, 04:20:31 pm »

I have recently been fortunate enough to win on e-bay the Revell 1.96 scale Cutty Sark, the special edition from 1974 with cloth finish sails, etc..

Unfortunately the kit had been in storage for some time, and on checking the contents, the chains and rigging yarns have been mislaid during that time. I would be most interested if anyone can inform me the two sizes of chain required to build the kit, and also the gauge of the rigging yarns. From what I can ather from the instructions there should be two gauges of yarns, one set in black for the standing rigging, the other in 'rope' colour for the running rigging.

I have approached Revell by e-mail and they cannot provide the missing items unsurprisingly in view of the time the model has been out of production, nor oint me in the direction of the specifications of the missing items. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone with any information.

Thanks in anticipation

Many thanks for directing me to the site concerning the Revell cutty Sark model. If I was apprehensive about the task in hand, reading the many pitfalls etc has certainly made me more so. Unfortunately it does not answer my query regarding the specifications of the chains and 'ropes' for the standing and running rigging. Anyway thanks again for taking the time to respond to my query. :-))

Just as a matter of interest - for the ropes at least, the airfix HMS bounty is 1:87 scale - not a million miles from 1:96, I seem to remember and I know I downloaded it - the building instructions for this are on line - where am I going - well it may indicate the gauge of the cotton used, as for chain, I guess that looking at an excellent site that does it - say shapeways - a suitable scale is available based on the instruction, the individual links can be guestimated.

Hi Dennis, I don't have any further info to help you along but would love to see a build log on this vessel.  O0
