Nitro Resistant Spray Paint for Wooden Boat
« on: October 05, 2015, 11:38:38 am »

I've done a bit of googling on this but haven't found any definitive suggestions for recommended paint in the UK.

I'm looking to paint the engine bay of my nitro powered boat and am looking for recommendations for paint which will resist nitro fuel.  This is an old boat I'm slowly restoring and I recall from the distant past I used a clear coat of some description to protect the paint when I first painted it.

Is there any recommended paints which will work and offer good resistance to nitro fuel?

You may be thinking of Tufcote ?

If not, 2K paints are fuel proof when fully cured.

Thanks Jerry,

Yes Tufcote sounds familiar.

I was hoping to avoid 2K paints as they're not the easiest to work with and this is a small area needing painting.  I'll have a look round for Tufcote.

Andy
Tufcote is the clear stuff which you can apply on top of most paints to make them fuel-proof. Like the man says, though, do test it on a scrap piece first. The only coloured paint which I ever found to be fully fuel-proof was K&B Epoxy (2-part).

Thanks again.

Any UK suppliers of Tufcote?  I did a quick google but not getting what I need.

This is the same stuff, albeit a little more expensive (!!!) than my last bottle. https://www.deluxematerials.co.uk/en/miniatures/88-aerokote-gloss-5060243901170.html
In my experience buying their brand goods direct from DeLuxe Materials is the most expensive way; most of their dealers will charge you less for the same thing, but do check on the pack size first!
DeLuxe's page shows a 150ml bottle but the text refers to 50ml, while SLEC picture a 100ml bottle and refer to 150ml in the blurb!
