Ruth II - Slipways Coastal Puffer kit
« on: October 07, 2015, 09:27:10 am »

A couple of weeks ago I received a PM from Martin, asking if I would like to do a small build,
of a kit of some sort. After deliberation, we decided to do a Model Slipway 1/72 Puffer.
I know this has been done by much better modellers than me here on Mayhem, so this is
an attempt by me to build small with 72 year old eyes and hands.
The kit duly arrived with the message that Martin vaguely remembers starting to cut it out
one wet Boxing Day.
This is the Kit wot I got  :-))

https://plus.google.com/photos/+ModelBoatMayhemPhotos/albums/6197834535812616609

The parts cut out were placed in envelopes with some parts numbered others not >>:-(
I will be recording my progress as we go merrily along

To be continued!

That's right Martin  :}

The stern post cut should be vertical,
not as seen in photo in post 1  :embarrassed:

Lovely little model  - now no longer available from Model Slipway

There is a Model Slipway web page for it, but it is no longer reachable from their site . . .

No skiff with this one Martin and no action bits <:(
Does Ruth like pink? {-)
I looked up the Gaelic for Ruth as a few of the puffers
had girls names but I don't think Rut is a good name
to go with.

Nope - it was the last one before the kit appeared - built for the late Craig Talbot of ACTion as a demo for his tiny steam engine and switcher units. Who is that handsome devil holding the model, BTW?

Yes Martin, Wicksteed 2010  :-))
A mean cup of coffee  8)

Anyway I have managed to trim and join the hull halves and built up the stern to take the rudder post.
Hull halves joined using Humbrol Poly Cement.
Prop aperture cut out by the usual drill and file method.

Running gear next O0

Managed a bit more over the weekend.
Lined up the motor and shaft and glued the supports.
When dry, I ran some slow setting epoxy around the
sterntube and allowed it a day to set hard.
Whilst waiting for the glue to dry, I put the windlass together using cyano
and soldered up the rudder assy.

I think the next job is to get some primer on the hull before starting on
the deck.

If Jackie and Lawrie could be persuaded to produce just the hull vac-formed mouldings (to order) then I have kept files of all of the other drawings etc to make the model and fittings. I could supply these computer files for no cost. I think the reason the kit was discontinued was the cost of restocking the etched brass sheets for the limited volume of sales it was by then achieving.

The East Coast weather has not allowed any outdoor painting so I have fitted the decks and hatch coamings.
I have just realised that the rubbing strakes need fitting before painting the hull so a big thankyou to the weather.
I will be fitting the rubbing strakes, 2.5mm and 1.5mm D sections. Should be fun with my sausage fingers. 8)

Jackie White ( Model Slipway ) says that Model Slipway can supply the moulded hull halves for £20 incl P&P (presumably to UK). I have copies of all the drawings and parts shapes.

Ned
I found that if you hold the D-sections in place with short pieces of masking tape then you can adjust their position until you're happy with it, then glue them on with Plastic Weld, Metpak or similar applied with a brush.

Thanks for that Dave.
I used masking tape then cyano but the 1.5 became very brittle. %)
I will use plastic weld on the 2.5

What length does the hull come out at?
And would you have to get in touch with Model Slipway direct.
The drawing that you have got for the model, would you be able to print with a normal inkjet printer on to A4 or would you need a more specialized program?

Would love a model puffer but I would be looking at no longer than 350mm so it could fit in my topbox  :-)

Bit of a setback in the painting dept. >>:-(
I roughened up the smooth abs hull with some
600 wet and dry used dry and sprayed the lower hull
with red oxide primer and left it to harden for three days
before masking to spray the black topside.
after four hours removed the masking and half the
red oxide with it.
Now I am wondering whether to risk masking the black and
giving the bottom another go or strip the whole lot and start
again.
Is there an etching primer that works with abs as I have always had
wood or grp hulls and no problems.

Action supplied a wiring diagram for lighting using led green& red sidelights and
a couple of GOW lamps for masthead steaming and stern lights.
As the light boards are just stuck on the sides of the wheelhouse I am at a loss
how to get them working. Size IS a problem  ;D
5P for size Lightboard and 3mm led
Any ideas guys and ladies?

Did you wash the hull down in warm soapy, but not washing up liquid, water?

The hull has been in and out of the washbasin in the bathroom a number of times to get the waterline looking right.
Dried off each time ,then the rubdown with 600 grit to key the surface, then a tack rag to get the last of the dust off.

Results Port and Starboard

Bit more thinking on lights
Fibre optic poked through the side of the wheelhouse
into a small lanp may work if I can find or make some 1/72
side lights.

Just tried with a bit of 4mm brass tube I had handy
will try tomorrow if I can get some 3mm.

Ned

Unless you've got a special there, the plastic bits are Styrene not ABS - think Airfix plastic kit.

See Inertias earlier posts about glueing with Mekpak and or Plastic Weld.

Possibly the red oxide primer was not suitable to use on styrene - Stavros may be able to give
you more guidance, but I would have thought that either Humbrol enamels or some type of
acrylic would work better.

You would need to contact Jackie at Model Slipway to buy the hull. It is styrene - they never used ABS for moulding.
You can download a free program from Autodesk called TrueView 2016 which will enable you to view all the AutoCAD R14 files I have. You would need to convert them to something like PDF or JPG and print them out as tiles onto A4, but your local copy-shop should be able to print directly onto the right-size paper (either A1 or A0 - I forget which).
If you can't be troubled to build one then I have one ready-built which I might be persuaded to part with. It's identical to the one on the box lid.

BTW Ned, I used ordinary Halfords Red Oxide primer spray on my hulls (not the "Plastic" version) and had no problem with it.

Thought the S in ABS stood for styrene???
