Humbrol question
« on: October 13, 2015, 08:42:43 pm »

I am currently repainting an SRN6 Hovercraft it was painted with Humbrol Gloss so I have used this for the repaint to get a good match but, my question is what do I use to protect the paint work.  I normally use halfords spray paints and there for laquer but I am not sure if it will craze.

Hi Tim

Dont think Humbrol needs a laquer overspray, Enamel is not usualy a paint which fades, however if you decide to spray, use some paint on scrap material, allow to dry then spray it, see if it reacts or not.

Halfords spray paints are solvent-based and will almost certainly bubble and lift the enamel. Humbrol make some clear coatings (in gloss, matt and satin) but they are eye-wateringly expensive and only available in bottles.

Use polyuretheane varnish, it will go on fine over Humbrol. I only use matt or satin but you can get gloss as well. Ronseal, Rustin's and Blackfriar sell it. See recent post here:

Makes sure it is the proper stuff NOT the quick dry variety.
