Well it does rather depend upon the exact frequency of the crystals as to what equipment they would legally be used with. You could consult this chart http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/archive/ra/publication/ra_info/ra365.htm and compare with the markings on the crystals,

If buying crystals, although some have their number starting with a 26, they are in the 27MHz band, so that is the number to look for when shopping.
The lowest common one is 29.995 (brown) up to 27.245 (blue).  Blue crystal can also be 27.255, which is a source of some confusion.  http://www.ukrcc.org/27mhz.html
Any 27MHz band transmitter crystal should work in any transmitter of that band, given that some might have a casing that effectively stops them being plugged in to some.

malcolm,

you made a small but significant typo I'm sure you meant 26.995 not 29.995

Indeed I did, but hopefully the link sorted it.

There are two 26Mhz frequencies you may encounter, 26.975Mhz or Grey/Brown Split and 26.995Mhz Brown. They should also be AM rather than FM crystals. FM 27Mhz sets were around for a short time in the eighties, JR I think, so unlikely to be what you have. 26Mhz AM crystals should be suitable for use in most 27Mhz 2 channel handsets you are likely to encounter, Futaba, Acoms and Sanwa being the most common. If your equipment still works, don't bin it. you can turn up at the pond, and if you don't see another member with a shiny metal telescopic antenna sticking up in the air, the frequency band is all yours, as they are all running stumpy aerial 2.4G sets ( with their make specific receivers etc!)..enjoy :-)

I'm just not cheap enough to spend a ton of money on a kit, fit it out with electronics then fit a radio set from the dark ages, but each to their own.

I'm still using 27 and 40 meg sets, one is 30 years old, and I love my Fleet set, solid and a joy to use, real metal construction.
I use them because they are and always have been faultless, plus I can sail my models in the radio deadspot our lake has where the 2.4 models can not go.
2.4 sets are fine, but change for it's own sake is pointless. After all, if age ruled something out, most of us would have to give up modeling.
