Bonding fiberglass hull and deck
« on: October 28, 2015, 05:19:34 am »

OK I PICKED UP A TID TUG ON THE CHEAP. On getting home it went into the loft for a few days. When I go her out it turned out the the deck was coming away from the hull. After some gentle pulling 90% of the deck is loose. Just the bow and stern have really got some glue on!
The question is have is...... using a syringe I could get gorilla pu down there the clamp the hull together.
Is gorilla pu suitable for this purpose.
Getting any epoxy down there will be really messy.
Is there an alternative glue I could use?
Recommendations please

Do you need a  low viscosity glue that you can pour down the joint?

Yep hence gorilla glue.  Just not sure if it's any good for fibreglass to fiberglass!

Dont be lazy, take the whole deck off then glue as you would normally.
I tend to use 3 types.
I fit the stringer to the hull with superglue or epoxy depending on size.
Brace the underside with car body filler.
Epoxy deck to hull/supports.
Fill in gaps with car body filler.
Never had a deck fail yet!!!

I cant get the whole deck off. the bow and stern are really stuck down. there was no bracing underneath around the edges but loads at the bow and stern. there is no  cross bracing either. i would love to get the whole deck off. I am going to persevere and keep chipping away at it until I have the whole deck off though.

    Hi,
If you don't get the deck off try smearing car body filler under the deck between the supports using your finger to smooth it, it won't be easy but once its gone of bingo. Not knowing or seeing the deck top its hard to come up with a solution but you could also scrape out the deck edge i.e. the top surface to make a vee then fill this sand down and paint. Good luck.
       Cheers,
              Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

You can use polyester or epoxy resin. That should bond it more than strong enough, and it's low viscosity. Epoxy glue has fillers mixed in to give it anti sag qualities, just what you don't want in this instance.

How about cutting the deck across at either end where it is free, seal up around the bow and stern, put a deck support across at either end and re-fit the deck as a single piece like you would normally do for a complete deck.

Poly resin and a strip of glass cloth. Failing that bring it to the shop and I'll stick some foam in it. Not sure where, but as we know foam is the answer to everything

I'd go for the new white stuff, slightly more dense than the green but the same price  ;)

Hi Klunk, I had that problem with a boat I purchased, I mixed 60min resin/hardener
in a spray paint can lid took the plunger out of a 50mm syringe poured the mixture
Into the syringe re fitter the plunger, pushed a tube onto the nozzle then piped around the deck.
With using slow cure resin you can refill the syringe if needed.

If you really cant reach inside to use glas cloth tape and resin to glue it together then yes pu adhesives work well for gluing fiberglass however be aware you wont be able to paint over it so try and fill any gaps on the outside first if possible.

Fibreglass to fibreglass stuff called Gravicol bonding paste.Trouble is believe smallest is a 5kg tin.Which would last forever in model boat building !
