Smit Nederland 1:33 Billing Boats
« on: November 09, 2015, 09:01:52 am »

Hello,

I am Kees and I live in Holland. A few weeks ago I bought a Billing Boats kit of the Smit Nederland with the plastic hull. Someone started to build on it years ago but not much work was done (luckily). Only the deck, the railling, shafts and motors were in place.
I paid 50 euro's (+/- 36 pounds) for her, including motors, esc, Futaba 2-channel remote control, battery, charger, fittings, paint so I think thats a good deal.

I never build functional modelships and I have very little experience with it so I didn't want to spend lots of money and with this kit I hope to build a working model for arround 175 euro's (+/- 125 pounds). It is my plan to build here out of the box as much as possible and make a nice working model with the detaills provided in the kit.

This is the model on the shelf at the previous owner. He had it for years and bought it from the guy who started building her

The first thing I did when I got it in my hobbyroom was to rip out all the wooden parts, the shafts, keel, motors..... well I ripped off everything. Sorry but the parts were glued very bad and the glue looked like rotten tar. The hull was not propperly cut out and the shafts and motors were not in line. After this I cleaned her and filled all the holes with styreen and epoxy.

After that I made some openings for the anchors later

And then I installed the beckerrudders again with epoxy.

Here the tunnels and the shafts were alligned and glued in place.

I found on the web that the total weight will be arround 10 kilo's and after I weighted all the materials I figured out that she whould need a few kilo's in ballast. So I added some ballast in the keel to give her a low center of gravity. More ballast will be addes later.

After that I made the steering engine. It was hard to make it without backlash but after some experimenting it worked good.

Then the motors. In the kit were two brand new motors from Graupner but when I checked them on the internet I was not satisfied with the specs. In a dusty corner in my hobbyroom I found a nice Decaperm 6v motor and I decided to us it and on Marktplaats (some kind of E-bay) I found another one. I also made some ferm but flexible couplings (because I didn't like the plastic ones in the kit) and I installed the motors in the hull.

I also did some improvement on the beckers to avoid them cooming apart. (the little brass tube)

I forgot to make greasepipes on the shafts earlier but luckily I managed to solder the on later without doing damage to the hull.

And I installed some grease, dirt and safety guards over the couplings and shafts.

Greetings Kees!

Was it hard work to get the rudders to move smoothly?

Guys......I am sure we have some build detail here in our MBM files from this same Dutch model builder Mr Kees de Mol

Again from memory, his work was top class :-))

Yes indeed I have a build log of a Scottish fishing trawler here on the forum. After that I also have build another trawler. I will place some pictures of it later.

@Martin: It wasn't easy because I wanted it to be strong and without uncontrolled movement. But it's working now

I installed the 'things' today so I can fit the propellorshafts again. The damaged hull is repaired and I think it doesn't looks bad. Next step is to place the shafts and motors again and the I am back at the point I ended last time.

Kees........

a. Those are rather substantial robust bolted mountings for the interface between the hull and the transition plate itself
b. Are they prototypical?
c. Will you still use A or P frames close by the Kort tubes?
d. The shaft supports in the original image appear to be equi spaced between the hull & the propeller.....which would not offer great support outby :o..........

I installed the shafts and they are aligned with the tubes. Also a floor and battery-rack is made.

The battery seemed to be dead <:(

But after charging for a while  %%

And now some hours later the meter showed 6,38 Volts so maybe there is still some life in this battery :D I hope so but time will tell.

I also made this bulkhead and added the last permanent ballast.

And some reinforcement on the front and I installed a 30 Y old soundmodule and speaker in te front. I have had this module now since I had my first boat (when I was arround 12Y old) and it sounds like poop. Bit it has a very big sentimtal vallue for me so I build it in the morning. It still sounds like ****

Its not very tidy but the front will be glued to be never opened again so nobody will see it again. I can just ajust the model with a small screwdriver when everything is glued later.

Hiya Kees, that's a very neat looking installation so far - hoping to improve on my Smit Nederland by following your build.

Thank you for posting.  :-))

I build a box for the electrics. One switch for ON(sailing) Off and Load. A fuse and two contacts for led-lights e.d. Everything on one battery but when I find out I need an extra battery I will make another box for the lights with its own battery.

Wow this has been a real dustcollector the past 1,5 years. During the build of my beamtrawlers I forgot about this model but now I want to finish her quick. I want it to be a really nice modell to play with so I decided I have to build fast and so it will be more like a fantasymodel based on the modelkit. So less details and not an acurate scalemodel. The goal is to have a model that sails good and looks good from a distance.

I replaced all the wood (it was totally bend) for polysterene plate and here is what I build the past few days.

I saw the date of the first entry and thought I had gone back in time Kees!

I am pleased that you repaired your disaster so well. She looks like a nice vessel and the work on the superstructure is nice and crisp.

I made a start with the railings for which I used the stanchions from the BB-kit. The soldering went well and the railings look good.

Much fun just building a boat without paying attention to every dimension or detail. Just building a nice looking boat like when i was a young boy. Much fun

and on with this nice little boat.

I finished the railings and they are ready for cleaning and painting.

And a mast made of brass and some bits and pieces from my spare-box. I don't know if I did it right but it looks good to me and thats fine.

And the winch made of kit-parts and some styrene. When painted she will do a great job on the deck

Now on with the deck and the deckopening to make it watertight

Thank You.

I managed to make the bullwarks and I made the deckopening watertight. Also started some colouring.
