Hi all

Real long-shot here....

I quite fancy a trip to the Monino Aircraft Museum near Moscow - maybe during 2016 - does anyone here know anyone who has actually been there?

Is it worth the money?
Is Zhukovsky worth a visit? Star City?

(I'm looking for honest opinions rather than a bunch of faked Tripadviser ones).

It depends - what are you looking for in particular?
In general - for sure Monino Aviation Museum is definitely worth a visit, since it could be considered one of the biggest museums of this kind in the world and with a very extended exposition...you could find there quite some rare stuff like Sopwith Triplane etc.
Private museum of Vadim Zadorozhniy (near Krasnogorsk, Moscow region) could be also highly recommended - especially in case you're interested in WW2 era aircraft.

Thanks for that - I'm a serious 'plane nerd but I've seen all the typical UK/US/German stuff in all the UK museums.
I've done the Just Jane taxi experience, done back seat in a Spitfire, done aerobatic flying lessons, helicopter experiences, gliding etc.

I'm particularly interested in the 1939 to present but especially the Cold War era when aircraft design jumped from slow piston engines up to the supersonic speed machines of the 1960s. The Russian stuff was just so much more 'Gerry Anderson' when compared to the US jets and it would be great to see it all in the flesh.

If you're looking for Soviet planes of Cold War era - that's the proper place to attend indeed.
In reality - the museum stuff is looking quite common to what you can see on the web-site.
Frankly - I've been to Monino last time somewhat four years ago, but they are progressing - and not to worse.
 
Recently I've paid a visit to another interesting place near Moscow - Kubinka tank museum...thou it's a bit different story.

A mini excursion via an certain Irish budget airline could get you a quick Soviet-iron fix without breaking the bank by flying on a day trip to Latvia. No visa required. Riga airport has Russian aircraft "museum" within a 5 minute walk of the terminal in airport grounds. Bit of a one-man-band scrappys , ring bell and ask for Viktor. Other Baltic countries would be a happy hunting ground too.

If you are into railways Riga has a nice Railway Museum too , lots of Soviet really heavy iron.  Car museum was closed for renovation, dang !   OK , you`ll need a couple of days !

Oooh - interesting.....All old technology interests me - trains & tanks are all good - especially the ones you never normally get to see.

Just looked through the aircraft in the museum in the link above, absolutely fascinating, but God! What ugly aeroplanes!
