Revell Thermopylae
« on: November 10, 2015, 06:15:53 pm »

Hi all we due to the kind generosity of CPNGROATS (a member on another forum who was so impressed by my model ships he gifted this to me from his own stash)I have received this

today.
Thank you very, very much George, very kind indeed.
I hastily opened it tonight eader to start but my missus says NO!!! "you have enough models on the go, cluttering up my house. you finish some of them off and get them out the way". to be fair I do have 9 on the go and bits are all over the place, she's generally ok so I cant complain ( but I have found in the past a bit of sweet talking can bring her round ) so watch this space, in the very near future.

I well remember, as a youngster, drooling over this and the sister kit "Cutty Sark" in the local model shop window, but it was way over my budget in those days. Something like 48 shillings when the average Airfix kit was about 3 shillings, If I recall.

Hi all well I've tried a little experiment, I got some copper and brass leaf with the intention of guilding the copper plates and spraying it with salt water to get the patination of the real plates, well they dissolved so that's out so now I'm thinking I will guild it then distress it with a combination of washes and such my question is ( as there is some debate as to weather it was copper or muntz metal which is an alloy of zinc and brass I think) should I guild it with copper or brass.

The experiment is very graphic in informing your choice I think Ken.

What scale is the model? It looks quite a large ship in a smaller scale? I like your decking especially as you have used dry effects rather than wet ones, very interesting.

I can understand why you sometimes have a short fuse as you are always stretching yourself trying out new techniques etc. Good show.

Another interesting blog to watch.

To bgin with I wondered if the copper plates were to shiny, but given the abrasive nature of sea water, I expect that it would be kept reasonably clean especially given its anti fouling properties.

I found this link:- http://www.mainemaritimemuseum.org/collection/notes-from-the-orlop/a-jostling-of-contraptions/ showing some old copper sheathing and how yellowish it is, so you are near the mark. I like the stains and marks on the plates!

Excellent progress Ken.

Looking good. I hope you are not going to use those hideous plastic sail on her, you've got too good a build to spoil it with those.

She is coming along nicely Ken. Don't worry Brian as Ken did something very clever with his sails for the last ship he built so tey won't look that plastic at all.

Going back to the anti-fouling, i painted soveriegn (victory in a different guise) with humbrol copper paint (particles in a suspension), i did notice that after a while it started to oxidize (green, so coated with matt varnish), so would certain areas be green or would all the copper be worn due to action of being under way, and for a ship of the line of 1785 be as utilized as this vessel - which in its day would be on the move constantly like all current container ships - time is money and all that.

Thermopylae, like Cutty Sark would have been sheathed
in Munz Metal, a 60/40 mix of Copper and Zinc with
traces of Iron.
Also called Yellow Metal, it was much cheaper than pure copper.
Hence the Brassy colour of the plating.
