MMM (Mobile Marine Models) Portgarth build (blow by blow)
« on: November 12, 2015, 01:48:05 pm »

Thought I better start a new thread.

I received the hull, Korts, Template pack & prop shafts a week ago.

After much head scratching and talking to others, I've gone for MMM T12 motors and mounts (well at least I know they must fit lol)

I'm also going to use a Raboesch Bow Thruster 25/28 x 154mm.

Currently I'm pulling together a few things/tools (props etc) I will need, but hope by this weekend to at least make a start.

Nice to see they supply build instructions with the korts now. Mine just appeared in a plastic bag, mind you there is not a lot that needs instructions for %)

Think you get the instructions with the korteze shafts Brian.
Korts come ala work it out.

Spending some time figuring out the install of these

Nothing on the plans, so a bit of guesswork based on the size of the thruster, and getting it as low as possible

    Hi,
I am going to be fitting a bow thruster to my Portgarth ( she is having a re-fit) and I am going to cut out the very bottom of the hull, site the bow thruster and then re fibreglass inside and out finally blending in the edges to the hull with Easysand filler. The lower you can get the bowthruster the better, less roll and think leverage. It will work. Hope this helps. (I'd send you some pics of my Norton cross but fail miserably trying to post them here).
             Cheers,
                   Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Hi Faz
I'm going for about 15mm (half inch) in from the keel (yellow arrow)

I've roughly found the center of the thruster (blue arrows) and will drill a .5mm pilot hole tomorrow through both sides before finally deciding if I'm happy, but I have to make sure the device will sit ok inside the hull and the pipes are long enough to allow them to be cut/trimmed to shape.

Don't forget you are not cutting a round hole, because of the flare of the bow, both backwards and upwards, the hole will be sort of egg shaped. So start small from your projected centre and enlarge it slowly with lots of holding the thruster tube up to check alignment.

     Hi Graham.D,
I wouldn't worry too much about getting a good fit around the tube (its quite right about the hole not being round because of the hull shape) how I do it is to drill out a rough shape at a right angle to the keel line and then file the opening to the shape that's needed so that the actual bowthruster tube can be tried in place until you are happy with the location.By doing this you can move the tube either up and down or side to side and when you are happy fix it in place. I make my own bow thrusters using plastic waste pipe and a short propshaft with a prop suitable for the I/D of the tube, the shaft is fitted at a low angle (the prop is fixed before this) and then fibreglassed in place. You can fit the tube first, with the hole cut out for the shaft, or fit the shaft to the tube then fix it in place it doesn't matter as you can move it to where you want it. Once you have everything in the place that you want you then finally fix everything to the hull with either fibreglass matting and resin or "P40" fibreglass strand mixture, when dried thoroughly fill and sand to blend in with the hull.
Whatever you do do not just rely on car body filler it is porous and does not have the strength of P40.
Hope this helps and if you need any more advice just ask.
                   Cheers,
                        Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

I found this idea on the net and it looks like a goer.

I drilled a small pilot hole through both sides at the center point. Bent a bit of piano wire to half the diameter of the Bow Thruster and cut up an old biro and taped it on the end.

Now I can draw the eliptical circle with a reasonable amount of accuracy, however I will still cut UNDER and keep opening till I'm happy, but it looks about right. Double checked and triple checked and connected the dots.

Guess if I get it wrong I can always GRP it back lol

Well I'll go to the foot of our stairs

Carefully drilled (by hand) one side to test the theory

Its just about 100% fit, some small filing and it will be perfect.

And a quick once around with the dremell and a perma-grit smooth burr and it fits

Will now get some scrap ply and pack it 100% horizontal then epoxy followed by filler (p40 or similar).

She's looking good mate! very neat don't forget to rough up the outside of the tube where you are fibreglassing it in place it will stick better. Keep the pic's coming.

Also decide on the position of the motor. Is it going to cause fitment problems later on in the build if it points upward? Could you get more room if you move it diagonally against the bow? Would it be better laid down horizontally agains the hull bottom?

My stern thruster would only fit at a diagonal and still be below deck level, but it has caused loads of problems later on. It would have been better laid flat along the hull bottom but the clamps holding the motor in wouldn't allow that.

Thanks Brian, good tip.

Also going to replace the supplied screws that are holding the motor to the pipe with Servo screws, so removing them is a lot easier with an allen key, not having to mess about trying to get a screwdriver to stay put at some odd angle.

I have done a fair few of these holes now and as fast faz says sand all the inside of the hull b4 you carry on use p40 to bond with and 38 or similar to make pretty looking great there tho

Hi
Your compass way of cutting thruster holes is spot on  :-)).I build boats and that's how I do it all be it on a bigger scale generally a scaffold pole !! I put a stern thruster in a boat couple years ago the hole was approximately 6' long & 2' wide pear shape.I put the hole in my Maggie M trying the torch method shine a torch through a pipe with an id the same as the od of the thruster tube 90° to the keel and you have the shape shinning you need to cut on the hull works well  :-))

Great work, I enjoyed doing this on my Portgarth and also took on a very similar technique. Looking forward to seeing more  :-))

Started cutting out the anchor holes, that way I can fill the Bow Thrusters and anchor holes with filler at the same time.

Also got my props today, so one more hurdle crossed and a bit more ready to install.

Cor Blimey cutting them feeing ports was a crap job  {:-{  In the end I used a dremel cut off wheel to cut a line down the middle and a Perma-grit dremel pointed mandel to open them up (like cutting butter), then cleaned them up with a diamond file (flat and curved).

Also finished the bow thruster install, and the anchor ports

     Yo Graham,
She's looking good! make sure you rub down the whole of the hull exterior with 440 then 600 wet n dry before you go anywhere near it with paint. I made this fatal mistake some time ago and as always it will be the last colour to go on before the reaction. Keep us posted.
       Cheers,
              Faz. :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Looking good Graham and some useful detail.
I am just embarking on the build of Ayton Cross with a similar set up as yourself.
