Uss Melvin/Lindberg Blue Devil destroyer r/c conversion
« on: November 14, 2015, 02:28:09 pm »

Hello!
I bought this kit on ebay for $22.00!
I started construction shortly after it arrived in June.
I have planned the whole build around an r/c upgrade.
I did not use the control rails supplied with this kit.
I have used a lot of the suggestions suggested by others who have posted here and on other peoples' experiences with this kit.
I also ordered the brass detail kit from Tm's Hardware. This is a great addition to this kit and I highly recommend it to anyone building this kit!
(I was further along with construction at that point and didn't feel like going back and redoing what I had already done. Sorry!)

The build for this kit is fast and easy.
You can make this as detailed as you want with the Tom's Hardware.
I had fun scratch building the parts for the depth charges on the aft racks.
I also prefer the brass rails over the plastic ones that came with this kit.
What I am seeking now is advice on motors-the one supplied is not adequate for driving both props. I prefer two motors with direct drive for each shaft.
Is there a more secure method of securing the shaft to the motor so that the shaft won't spin off?
Also, I would like recommendations as to what servos and configuration to use for controlling the gun/torpedo mounts.
Do I need a separate type of servo for the rudder?
I would also like to be able to control the speed output from the motors. What ESC system is recommended?
I have a four channel remote to use with this ship. Let me know if I need something with more channels is needed please!
Also, do I need a separate battery for controlling the servos and the motors?
The deck will be sealed with a plywood sub deck sealed with silicone after the electronics are in place.
I have placed bulkheads inside the hull and secured them with rubber cement.
I am using the supplied screws to attach the deck to the hull.
I am looking forward to hearing back from you!

It is interesting to see the different methods and approaches people have to building the kit. The hull is a good robust casting and is forgiving to our chopping and midifying it for different prop and rudder layouts.
