Bed / Mattress Toppers - any recommendations?
« on: November 17, 2015, 05:19:18 pm »

 Anyone use a Mattress Topper?

Do you prefer memory foam, natural wool, ordinary foam, straw, kapok, feathers, gravel or anything else – are they worth the money or do you just go and buy a new bed instead?
Are the foam ones sweaty / non-breathable?
Do the feather ones poke you in the night?
Do the kapok ones squash to nothing in a couple of weeks?

Any information gratefully received before we waste any money.

Use one ONLY if you like a very soft bed (not good for your back though).
25mm is too thin, go for a 50mm but remember you will need a deep bottom sheet to allow for the extra thickness.
Don't use memory foam if you get hot at night, foam (ordinary or memory) heats you up. Feather is cooler.
Down is better than feathers as the feathers are stiffer.
Get one with a cotton (high count thread - 400+) cover, they let less poke through.
Make sure it has good, strong elastics on each corner to stop it trying to escape when you roll over.

Nighty, night  :-) :-)

Wow - thanks for that!

Our bed has a very firm matress and the top layers of padding have gradually squashed to make it like a board - some extra softness would be appreciated.  :-))

We went to a dedicated bed show room tried a lot and finished up with a Tempur mattres 10years on still like new .  When I worked in the hotel maintainance we bought Hypnos beds with pocket springs and had very good service .

Got a full 8" tempura matress. Cured my back ache in 4 weeks. The only problem when I initially received it was the smell. It makes you feel sick if you use it straight away. Mine went in the garden for 5 weeks to air properly in a lean to I built to keep the rain and wind off it till the smell went.

I can recommend The Wool Room for a mattress topper.

100% wool filling - absolutely amazing results - they do a genuine 100% money back deal on quilt and topper purchased together - you take it home and try it for I think it's 30 days and if you don't like it you take it back for a full, no quibble refund. Not cheap but worth every penny in my opinion and nice people to do business with. I was bought up that I had to put my woolly jumper on to keep warm and so could not believe the results when I tried it for myself - the wool is truly amazing at keeping you at just the right temperature - no hot spots under your back etc etc.

I can hand on my heart say that I have never slept so well until I used their product - check it out - look at their testimonial page - we can't all be wrong:) and I bought the product in the main because I didn't believe their claims could be true!

Check out their website http://www.thewoolroom.com/sleep-guarantee/

All the best

Thanks guys

That's all good info.
We have an expensive Vi-Spring bed but the top layer of the matress has lost its comfort and we need it to last another 18 months until we move house.
It looks like a topper can extend its life.

I know this might seem a bit daft but have you tried turning it ,that's over and end to end , this was done every 2 months in the hotel helps to keep its shape . No need to do this with a Tepura mattress. Sorry if I am stating the obvious

I can second that! Many years ago we kept sheep on our small farm and amassed a shed-full of wool which, being impoverished farmers unable to afford a new mattress ,we got the wool carded and then made our own mattress about 8" thick- -it was mega comfortable alright, but turning such a huge and heavy item was likely to cause back-ache itself!

Hypnos do a great range of mattresses and if you visit a showroom you will receive really good advice on what you need. On line you will miss out on that custom info and the few pounds saved on line are lost because you'll end up with a less than best compatible model. I had a long chat and ended up getting a softer mattress than previously and my back has benefited from that.

As for mattress toppers I'd like a new one but divorce is so expensive these days  O0

When you think how much money we spend on non important stuff that we only use for maybe a few minutes a day or a few hours a week.
Then think of the cost of a good mattress (not cheap) but is something we use every night for maybe 8 hours a night, and how important sleep is, then even the most expensive mattresses are cheap.
