U.S.S. Walke DD-723 Static Build
« on: November 17, 2015, 10:52:05 pm »

Dear Folks,  I've been quiet for a time, but have been busy building a static model of the U.S.S. Walke DD-723 destroyer. This is a kit build by Technoart.  Parts are cast from resin, bronze and brass photo-etched sheets.  Scale is 1:192.  Hundreds of very small pieces and I should say a real challenge for this old guy.  I will attempt to post a few pics. to get things going. I'm well on my way as you will see. Hope you enjoy the build as much as I have been.

regards,

Looks brilliant so far Dennis - you must have steady hands and nerves of steel - oh, and a good magnifier for some of the parts...

Keep up the good work.  :-))

Thank you Capt.  It does take steady hands.  Lots of detail and guess that's why I enjoy it so.  Reminds me of the gentleman who builds very fine miniture ship models that posted on this forum.  I haven't seen his work in some time.  Hope he is well.

Hi Dennis, I just wouldn't be able to work at that scale with my shakey hands however, enjoying your updates and looking out for the next one.  :-))

More detail work. Anchor in, motor gig in, aft helm station and directors in, 20mm singles aft tub in.  A mention about the kit manufacturer, Tehnoart.  Many of the parts, including the hull are made from cast resin. All metal castings are bronze and the rest is brass etch sheets.  I must say that the detail at this scale 1:192 (1/16"=1') is incredible.  Their kits can produce museum quality models.  They have a kit of the U.S.S. Ward, 4 stacker at the same scale, with tons of bronze and brass... price is daunting at $1,000 US.  I am trying to decide what my next project will be and have been eyeing a kit by Trumpeter of the battleship "Mighty Mo"..... at 54" long, she would be impressive. She is plastic with a nice compliment of photo etched sheets.  Kit price is $400US, then you can get an upgrade kit with more brass for another $400US.. that puts me at about the same for the Ward kit, which is much smaller, but far ahead in detail and quality.  I know that at these prices, maybe I should jump into RC.  My physical limitations pretty much keep me to static, so I'll just have to decide.  I am really enjoying this fantastic forum. The talent and skill is amazing.

Gorgeous work Derek. Those quad Bofors look like a challenge! Re your hobby, you do as much or as little as you want. Sailing is fun, and for some this is the reason they build boats, but for others the building is the best part of the hobby. The real issue is balancing detail with sailability. I have a couple of friends who don't build warships as they reckon something falls off a warship model every time it takes to the water :}

Hw ever you do your hobby Derek, enjoy it :-))

Dear Folks, my DD-723 Destroyer is now finished.  Following will be some pictures.  A friend wants me to build him a model of Buzzards Bay 12-1/2 sailboat, so that will fill my time as I wait for my next major project, which will be the U.S.S. Indianapolis CV-35.  I am very excited about this model, as the detail will be mind blowing and I predict the project will take over a year to complete.  I should receive the kit sometime in March of this year and will post progress here for your enjoyment.  In the mean time, keep up the good work folks.

Best regards,

Dennis
