Power handling of Planet T5 RX with two servos
« on: November 20, 2015, 03:52:03 PM »

I'm building a 40 inch long sailing trawler which obviously has a large sail area, I intend to use two large servos, one winch and one with an arm, to independently control the jibs (2) and the main sail. I need to confirm that the Planet RX will happily pass enough current to power the servos without overheating and burning out. If not what do I need to power them. Weight is not an issue so I intend to use a large battery so that current draw is not a problem, I just don't want to fry the RX.

Hello,

I have used two large servos for years with the Planet receiver.
Have a look on my website under "J Class Endeavour".

John.

Thank you, that was the reply I was hoping for but didn't want all my hard work to sail off out of control because I didn't ask to be sure.

I use a Y lead on my Marblehead. The winch is Plugged into one leg of the Y & the Rx feeds from the other leg The main plugs to the switch. The  harness    is delivering the winch power not the track in the RX.

I'm a tad confused by that as I don't understand how the RX is only supplying a switching current not the driving current in a Y lead, sounds perfect to protect the RX but I am a newby when it come to radio control.

The Y lead has the power (Pos & Neg) & the Signal connected together. So power for the winch stays in the Y harness & doesn't travel through the Rx.

Hello,

Just checked the wiring in my boat, it is the same as tr7v8 has done.
No heavy loads on the Rx.

Sorry for being a bit thick but I think I've got it!

So in effect the positive and negative only go to the RX to power the RX and that provides a signal to the servo(s) which are powered by direct connection to the battery, through common rails in the RX, and the signal lead shown going to the battery is redundant (just happens to be in the Y connector so that the Y lead can be used to siamese two servos to one channel).

I could in reality connect the battery positive and negative directly to each servo and also to the RX to power that, then take just a signal wire to each servo from the relevant channel of the RX.
