in years past I have built several castles from 4mm or 6mm ply and some 3/4" square battening held together with panel pins and PVA glue. Garages should be as easy, parts can be made modular and able to fit inside each other for storage.

As a kid my dad made me and my sister, castles, dolls houses, an ark, and lots of bridge sections, all out of 6mm ply and battens, and my sister had a zoo, the castle had seperate keep and outer walls with gate. All fairly simple box construction, with big windows to get small hands in.

there are plenty on the auction site ebay under this link,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=&_sop=10&_osacat=220&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1311.R3.TR11.TRC1.A0.H1.Xtoy+garage.TRS0&_nkw=wooden+toy+garage&_sacat=220

but this one was rather rugged looking.

but also I believe the Hobbies or Hobbys stores do kits for them just as they do dolls houses.

For little dosh you can make one from an upside down cardboard box covered with brick wallpaper as used in dolls houses and use your imagination,  then if the lad likes it then you can make a more robust one.
