Type 12 (M) Deck Colour Falklands War
« on: November 30, 2015, 05:03:22 pm »

Hello, looking for help again if possible. After all my research on HMS Plymouth & Yarmouth during the Falklands War, I still can't confirm 100% what the deck colour was. It's looking like holly bush green (BS4800/5252), could anyone confirm?
Many thanks,
Robbie

I am fairly sure that around 1980 the deck colour changed from green to grey. By 1982 dark sea grey or its near equivalent was used on the entire fleet, including the type 12s.

Did some preparation work on Falmouth prior
to Falkland deployment in Chatham 82 and her
decks were painted grey at that time.

Hi, I was on the Rhyl (another type 12) during that time (and trouble) and she had grey decks. Then I joined the Plymouth shortly after her refit to repair the damage she received by which time she definitely had grey decks. As unbuiltnautilus said, most RN ships had grey decks by then.

From 1980, I was working in Devonport and I concur with the above, RN ships had gone over to a two part grey paint. I was working at Flagstaff steps and my office overlooked the vessels then, only vessels left then using the old green deck paint were the RMAS and I suspect that was to use up stock left in stores.

Thanks all for the information, very much appreciated. Is the deck grey lighter or darker than the superstructure / hull?
Thanks again,
Robbie

Hi,

When applied it was dark (Camerex non skid) nearest paint I got to it was Dark Sea Grey (Humbrol) but oviously this weathers over time and becomes lighter but no where near as light as superstructure grey again I think i used light sea grey all this depends on scale etc.
