Hi Dave (and all Puffer builders!)

According to the 'Friends of VIC 32' newsletter, it's on at 9pm. Not sure how we Sassenachs get to view it.  <:(

Hi folks

You should be able to access the programme outside Scotland via the BBC iPlayer. Use the 'Categories' option and select Scotland. There may be a delay after transmission until the programme is available. Once the iplayer has it you have the usual 30 days to watch it when you like.

Sorry for those of you outside the UK...iPlayer is only available within the UK at the moment.

If you are outside UK and use a VPN, log into a UK server and you can access BBC iPlayer.
But you might already know that.

BBC iPlayer is currently only available  in the UK. By using a VPN, and linking to a UK server, the BBC sees the connection as being within the UK.

You need to download and install VPN software on your device. Some are free, but those VPNs are all blocked where I live. I use Astrill which costs me about USD 60 per year. It give me access to sites that would otherwise be blocked to me (social networking, the NYT, and sometimes even MBM).

Once you have installed your VPN, open it, there will be a list of servers that you can connect to. Just connect to a based server.

I used identitycloaker.com in the past to view iplayer. It cost just a few euros and worked well. Once I finished with it I just removed it. No hassle. Maybe 1 email a year asking if I want to re install. A good service with no problems and easy to use.

Nemo is proud to be the son of a Mate on Puffer's. O0  Dad worked with Ross& Marshalls (Skylight etc) for nearly 20 years.  He was a mine of Puffer yarns. (Para Handy was fiction -but a great read for sure)

Here is one of his boats with him on board negotiating the Inchinnan Swing Bridge on the White Cart heading for Paisley. I was watching on the shore. Forget the name of the Puffer!

Without the stories there would probably no ships left now.
And the TV series.
Most of the Vic supporters come from anywhere but the Clyde.
The Vic is not a true puffer either, but the best we've got.

One story my Dad told me was when they were heading upriver on a falling tide on the Clyde near Greenock during blackout conditions in WW2. Very small shaded lights were permitted on vessels and Dad's puffer was navigating by certain shore marks, one of which was reported by the foredeck lookout to be moving. In no uncertain terms was he advised by the wheelhouse to leave off the whisky before it got dark as shore marks did NOT move! However, he insisted, and the Skipper went forward with binoculars, whereupon he found that they were navigating on the stern-light of a submarine searching for a suitable anchorage. The upset (and slightly tipsy) lookout then armed himself with lumps of coal from the hold and began to bombard the sub with his 'ammo'.
The loudhailer reply to this was something like, 'If whoever is chucking coal at my  Submarine wants a torpedo up his erse, he is going the right way about it!'

Last time I saw a puffer was in Loch Long in the late 1970's, first I saw this great cloud of black smoke on the horizon, when she got near I was amazed at the sight of flames of about 6 feet in height shooting out of the funnel. If I remember she was an old admiralty VIC in preservation being used for holiday trips. Never seen anything like it since.

SIGH!  Smoke we can only dream of!  O0  Nothing like a true puffer though.

As I posted on an earlier thread relating to the VIC96 in respect to what is and isn't a 'puffer':-

"I think some clarification is needed here. 'Puffers' were originally scows used on the Forth & Clyde Canal that were outfitted with non-condensing steam engines and exhausted steam up the lum. Thus they produced a characteristic puffing sound in the manner of a steam locomotive. Once condensing steam plant was introduced, they lost the puffing sound and, logically, could no longer be described as 'Puffers'. However, the term 'Puffer' continued to be used to describe any small mechanically powered cargo vessel trading on the canals of Scotland, the West Coast and Islands with a few operating on the East Coast. Thus the original puffers, their condensing successors, VICs and, the last of the line - diesel coasters - were all generically known in Scotland as 'Puffers'. Different machinery, different designs, different construction but all engaged in the same trade and known as Puffers."

@Nemo,
The Inchinnan bridge was not a swing bridge,
but a Rolling Bascule Bridge.

The coast guard get numerous reports each summer that there is a boat on fire when the VIC 32 is out sailing.  The coast guard first ring the Captain Nick Walker to check his position before sounding the alarm.
