@Nemo,
The Inchinnan bridge was not a swing bridge,
but a Rolling Bascule Bridge.Ned
ned.

Ned: Having lived within yards of it for nearly 20 years, I do know that it is technically a Scherzer Rolling Lift Bascule Bridge. Built by Sir William Arrol even. (Tower Bridge, Forth Rail Bridge etc)
Locally, whatever it's true designation, it has always been known as the 'Swing Bridge', in memory of its ancient predecessor installed in 1838.  The daft thing is, the bridge is not in Inchinnan, but on the Renfrew side of the river!
BTW - it is still there!  ok2

We have one in Grimsby, built by the same Gentleman.
Still in use today.

Well?
Did anyone watch it?
Watched it last night and at the start
calling the Vic ,the last remaining puffer
I thought 'Here we go again' but it got better.
The researcher had got it mostly right and it
turned out nae bad.
Should please our Antipodean steamers that
The Vic's engineer was from Oz %)

I think the engineer is from New Zealand, as was his brother the previous engineer. {:-{  The programme was good but didn't mention all the Puffer films, The Maggie etc , or the actors who have played Para Handy, copyright problems no doubt.

I enjoyed the programme - again.
My Dad told me the story about the whisky barrels and 'evaporation'   ok2 ok2
The trick was not to take too much from each barrel as that would be a giveaway. Dad said the drilled hole into which was inserted a straw to draw of a 'sample' was refilled with a mixture of putty and sheep-droppings which approximated the colour of the barrel to the scanning eyes of HM Customs.  O0

I might as well add here a pic of one of Dads last boats, the 'Jennie' of Larne. Not known where taken but probably in the early 40's. Sadly, she struck a reef off the north of the Isle of Eigg around 1950 with a full cargo of coal. her sister ship, the 'Lydia' was dispatched to offload some coal to assist re-floating, but unfortunately, due to rough weather, the Lydia got stuck as well and both vessels were lost. The second pic shows the remains of 'Jennie' after a heavy storm when her hull was washed into a crevice and all that remains to this day are slowly rusting awaw.

'Spartan' is a museum exhibit at Irvine whose future afloat seems uncertain while the 'VIC 27' at the Crinan Boatyard remains under restoration as does the former 'Eldesa' (renamed 'Vital Spark of Glasgow') at Inverary. Thus it is reasonable to describe the 'VIC 32' as the last remaining operating puffer. Unless I've overlooked one?

Yes Ned, part of the Boat Museum Trust.
One of J&J Hay of Kirkintilloch boats. One of many named after tribes and warriors, ie.  Boer, Kaffir, Roman etc.

There's a dozen or so photos on the Basuto link above. Next time I go across I'll take some photos and post them up.

As my Puffer Guru pointed out to me, I did miss a few. Basuto is a floating exhibit at the National Waterways Museum, Ellesmere Port, VIC 37 is/was at Maryport Maritime Museum and some of the very late motorships that operated into the 70's may still be knocking around in the world.  VIC24 was laid up down Plymouth way but is probably gone now.
Kyles shifted to the Scottish Maritime Museum, Irvine base, after funding was withdrawn from Braehead base but I'm not sure she qualifies as a Puffer, although at 143 years old, she must be due some kind of award for longevity.

Thus, it can be said that the VIC32 is the last operational puffer in UK waters unless and until VIC27/Auld Reekie joins her.

The BBC 2 documentary gave the arrival of the CalMac ROROs as the reason for the demise of the puffers. What it didn't mention was that CalMac also received a Government subsidy that was never available to the puffers. Len Paterson's excellent 'Light in the Glens' gives a full explanation of this.

VIC 99 is still afloat as a house boat about a mile down river of Stourport-on-Severn and can be seen on google maps.
