« on: December 22, 2015, 10:03:59 am »

I will be watching a 3 part series about the rebuilding/ restoring of a VIC Auld Reekie Clyde Puffer on BBC Alba starting Tuesday 29th December 2030hrs.

I hope that it is good as it has the potential to be very interesting and obviously follows the documentary a couple of weeks ago. I am hoping that it is in English unlike the page that I have linked to below!

Yes....'subtitles' are not just words for the hearing impaired, but also include translations from one tongue  :P to another

The text I copied is from the WEB site....so can only assume it also refers to the subject matter ..... Derek

Can you not get it on the internet using one of the catch up services? If not I understand that you could use a proxy server to get a UK location.

I am guessing that chunks of the programme will be in English as I doubt that all of those doing the restoration speak Gaelic.

Why has someone amalgamated this BBC Alba thread with the previous BBC Scotland thread that was for a completely different programme on a completely different TV channel? Is this the thread for anything to do with Puffers anywhere and at any time in the future?

I presume it is the confusion of what is BBC Scotland (English language) and BBC Alba (Gaelic language).  The usual north of Watford or in this case, Hadrian`s Wall syndrome.    BTW. It is pronounced Gallick (Scots) not Gale-ick( Irish)

Duncan

I don't think that this is on BBC Scotland.

I started this as a separate thread & would much have preferred it to stay that way so as to let the largest number of interested modellers be made aware. The new topic heading was much more likely to catch the eye than a post on page 2 of a long thread that has the wrong "subject".

The programme is on BBC Alba a TV Channel that transmits programmes in Gaelic throughout Scotland.

I can re-separate out the two topics no problem but I though we were talking about the same series of programs?!

Correct but I dont think a lot of people appreciate that BBC Alba is the Gaelic language only channel and not BBC Scotland which is the English language BBC programme, mostly like BBC One but with a few regional variations, seldom, any Gaelic.  Now watch a weather programme on both BBC Scotland and BBC One and see the differances >:-o .   Iceberg/Goldberg syndrome.

They are both about Puffers but that is where the commonality ends. As I said I think more will be informed about the existence of this if it has my original "subject" heading.

For those who cannot get the programmes from UK, here is a small Youtube slideshow showing Auld Reekie partial dismantling and slipping.  Shows what a task lies ahead of them.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4U_bznFgK8
Better than nothing! :-))

Thanks Nemo......

0:34 minutes....is that a result of using 'Mac & Myer for hire' as riggers?  {-)...[I imagine them as similar to the builder [Mr. O'reilly] that Basil Faulty uses]

1:22 minutes ...would be an old engine fitters delight  %)

if any others surface please just post them  :-))

Derek - as an old engine fitter - I agree with your -  %)!! But I truly would love to get my hands mucky on this old girl. O0
Here is a vid of the wonderful engine-room restoration so you have a sort of 'before and after' -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g59RXsDGy8   As Para Handy would say, 'It is chust sublime!'.

*A few years back I did a few weekends on the SS Shieldhall (http://www.ss-shieldhall.co.uk/) and got stuck into some pump repairs in the engine-room, loved it!

Watched all three episodes. Without spoiling it, they have a lot to go yet before the auld girl gets afloat.  So far new boiler new lum,  engine rebuilt, still some hull plates to be replaced and a new wheelhouse to replace the old one which just fell apart during the lift. If you cant get it on iplayers etc at least they have a website and  are on facebook.    www.vic27.co.uk     Beeb Alba will no doubt be following the rebuild to the end. I wonder if we asked for an English version on BBC1 or 2 would  they transmit for the enthusiasts as they have done for the canal system.
