SDM TUG Salvador Dalì by alimurimeta
« on: January 07, 2016, 12:17:14 pm »

Hi all, I open this topic for you to see the phases of graphic design of my current contiere. It is a new type of harbor tugs, ship docking module, characterized by the propulsion system consists of two schottels drive staggered along the center line of the hull. With this propulsion is possible to make any movement, also the transverse translation. For this reason, the sdm tugs have the form of a sleeve giant.
The design covers both the hull and the propulsion system.

Indeed today the model I almost passed, as the site has been ongoing for several months. Therefore if there impressed many post avanzamanti quickly
Greetings

Hi everyone here is another photo of the block construction phases of the tug Salvador Dali.
I keel and printed on paper and pasted all on a panel of MDF 6mm advanced from its cabinet home. With the tunnel I cut the pieces of the hull. The MDF is easy to cut and has no defects or chipping. Also in this case it is at zero cost
With the aid of row and brackets I glued the ordinates and the terminals of the bow and stern, This model has two fins of drift that serve to stabilize when lateral translation

Once you have the skeleton of the hull I started cutting and posizionamentop blocks fill between frames, polystyrene thermal insulation

The next step involves the rolling of the hull with glass fabric and epoxy resin

Hello everyone. I applied a coat of epoxy grout from the body to the hull. The dosage of this grout is very easy because it is 1: 1 by weight. To conserve km of sandpaper, sanding the hull to remove the putty plentiful I did wet and after 7 days after application putty, so that the same is completely cross-linked, so nice dry.

I also had a hand to superstructures. The achieve with polystyrene from 1 mm (plastic card type). For cutting use a common size balsa sharp. To give the right forms to the various pieces of the deck, I made masks cut vinyl stickers with the cutting plotter, which apply on the sheets of polystyrene. In this way the parts are very precise.

SORRY FOR MY POOR ENGLISH. I'M LEARNING

So, another brief update from the yard sdm tug.
I spent half the afternoon to polish the hull after waiting a week after grouting epoxy. Effectively giving some time to the grout to crosslink completely, was an advantage. Sanding was quite fast and without consuming meters of sand paper. I applied a strip of plastic card to the hull to simulate the edge of the true where are installed rubber fenders.
With a little patience I assembled "dry", ie only with tape, the wheelhouse, to check the shapes and proportions. Looking good

I used epoxy resin and glass fabric for the reinforcement of the hull. The resin has a pot life of almost a 'now, so it's no hurry too. First I cut out a piece of fiberglass from 50grams / square meter, slightly larger than the hull. Except I prepared resin (ratio 100: 25) per 50 grams. To wet the glass fiber, I used a roller to paint the walls, obviously smaller

Greetings and see you soon

Hello, another update shipyard tug SDM.
I glued the bridge, with epoxy resin, made of 4 pieces of plasticard 1 mm thick.

With the usual self-adhesive templates vinyl I cut the sides of the stern and the bow and its uprights.

Fantastic fiberglass work.
You're making quick progress with your build.
My future build would be one of the Tug Malta fleet.

I was probably the fourth person to build the SDM tug.
Those are my line drawings on tissue.  :-))

The tug can easily traverse using gears ratios, and servo expanders or your transmitter to
rotate the steering servos up 180° or more. My drives rotate about 270° this allows for
steering when running sideways, or when trying to walk a barge or tow.
I still can't walk a barge on demand... I have to work to get a barge walking.

Hi Alimurimeta. That build is coming along tidily. The shape reminds me of first world war monitors. They could have doine with schottels!!

A little disappointed with the colour scheme.
With a name like Salvador Dali I was expecting something a little more.... er... out there

Nice little pond, you're going to need a tow so you 'Dali can get to work.

Hello Umii, your sdm model was the starting point for the modeling of my tug. As far as I know, in Italy there are only two people who have built a tug sdm  :-))

It is great to see more modelers from Italy.
My destroyer is a Maestrale class, Sirocco. And the last couple of years, more and
more photos of the old fleet are surfacing.
____________
I like the interior of the Endeavor,.. but I so want to fix the fendering.  %%

Your sea trials look great.
I made a MkI SDM in 1/50 – not many of that version around. Same hull as the Dali but at that smaller size it is much deeper.
My build was inspired by Umi and JPcat's MkIIs and Steve Cox's Suwanney River.
The fenders were a nightmare.
I look forward to your progress.

Hi, as mentioned in a previous post, I show you pictures of the mechanical propulsion and maneuvering.
I decided to change the system of rotation of the SCHOTTEL proposed by graupner. The toothed barbell clove is weak and does not allow a complete rotation through 360 °. I found in a shop model car rc of the toothed crowns used for the couplings of the gears. I bought two 80 teeth 0.8 module. Crowns I fastened with three screws to the bracket to the disc that came with the servants.
To fix the servants, I made a small castle in plywood and aluminum, resin that will be to ensure maximum strength and adhesion to the hull. The servos will have to be mounted upside down, to make dovetailed crown and pinion SCHOTTEL. The trick to have slightly increased the draft of the hull (about 10%) has assured me that the servos do not touch the compartment cover RC
The first reduction stage of the engines has been realized with a pair of cylindrical gears. The ratio is 1: 3.3. To protect the gears will realize a casing with plexiglass transparent, to be able to always see the status of the teeth and their lubrication
The second reduction stage is provided by the bevel of the SCHOTTEL (1: 2). So I have a total reduction of 1: 5.3 which seems to work very well in the models of sdm tug already made in this scale.

See you soon

A clever bit of re-engineering parts to make them better.
