Amen Bob. The turret is gorgeous and shows the quality you can get from ship kits of this size.

I look forward to seeing more progress Nick!

Hi Victorian

I would be very interested to see more pictures of the Texas, glad you enjoyed the read- it took a while to gather. When you compare a Majestic to Dreadnought you can really see why it was such a shock to the world, the physical size and minimalistic superstructure give an impression of a ship of war whilst Majestic had a look of grandure and Victorian splendure.

All port holes drilled and sanded down ready for glazing once the hull is painted. Trial fitting the bollards and fair leads reading for permanent fixing tomorrow morning.

Starboard wing turret barbette, and armour finished. I've replaced the vacform barbette with 90mm dia acrylic tube which is 10mm high. I used the kits armour made from the pre printed plastic card glued together. A bit of filler to blend together and voilą.

It's looking good. I hope to be their with my finished 1/96 scale Iron Duke so we can sail in company.

Is there a plan for a "Jutland" meet at Wicksteed if so which day Saturday or Sunday as I was planning on going Saturday, weather permitting!

May I suggest you check the depth of the barbette armour on the wing turrets as this seems very deep. I think with Dreadnought it was 11" deep so just less than 1/8" inch. It may just be the lighting in the picture.

Turning turrets? On Iron Duke I have used a small sail winch controlled by a "servomorph" which both slows the winch down and controls the degrees of rotation. I have linked several turrets together with fishing line and it all works quite well.

Looking forward to more of the build and pictures.

Enjoy

Geoff

Hi Geoff

Bit of both regarding the wing turrets! They are a bit wider than they should be :embarrassed:

I think that Saturday will be the day to hold the Jutland meet, as you say weather permitting, hopefully TonyH will have his Nassau and escorts ready too.

At the moment I'm leaving the turrets alone until after mayhem at Wicksteed, too much to get done but I'll leave the turrets detachable for conversion at a later date. :-))

Mega and cool Nick! Acrylic, as seen in the funnels on Ready, is a great material to use.

Hm, the Dreadnought is sleeker, longer, more efficient. The turrets are much more workmanlike.

Yes that's what I thought too!

It's got a more serious look to it, what we would say in the military- purpose built killing machine

Bit more work done, wasn't supposed to be in the country but things got cancelled at very short notice- one hour away from boarding the aircraft!

I've made the rear engine room vent and mainmast superstructure, just need to add the two supporting poles for the mast and the main top. Admiral's day cabin has been partially made and positioned behind the fore funnel. Pictures to come tomorrow night once I've charged up the camera!

Looking great!  :-)). I must get on with my model soon.
What part of the ships life are you going for?
Mine is late life after the 1917/18 refit.

Thanks dreadnought

I'm going for the 1916 refit, the one just before yours. The reason, wanted a Jutland era battleship but realised too late that she didn't participate in the battle due to this refit, but hey ho that's life!

She might have been available for the non event that occurred in August 1916, so fret not Nick.

Nick.....I understood that the 12" MK X mounts by Vickers or Armstrong had a depression/elevation capability of -5 to +13 degrees

Having said this, I have only seen one image with a similar mounting [MK XII] elevated above ZERO :o

Any thoughts on this?.....& what elevation do you plan to depict?....Derek

Pictures as promised...

And finally if you look in the background you can see Dreadnought taking on the Dark Side TIE Fighter!

Derek

They must have been able to elevate but there must be very few photos of them in this position. I intend to model them in the zero degree position for ease and aesthetics.

Did you say you had spare turrets for the Prince George?

I've got some old vacform items from the kit that were replaced by a new upgrade item from Ron made from GRP, not 100% accurate today but turrets none the less!

Hi everyone

Bit more work done, not long now before paint is applied :o

The signal tower. With secondary rangefinder in place on rails.

The almost completed 12" turrets with 12pdrs fitted.

Looking good indeed, but may I suggest you thin the armour abreast the beam turrets? A lot of work but much easier at this stage.

Hope its ready for Wicksteed at the end of May ! Build faster!!

Cheers

It is interesting to see Prince George and Dreadnought next to each other and notice the difference ten years of naval design and influence had on capital ships.

Keep up the good work Nick, Did the range finder slide on these rails or are they reinforcements? I would think if the latter, they would be under the platform.

Hi everyone

Update so far, everything seems to be going to schedule even if I try to mess things up when I drilled out the foremast tripod supports.

Looking good and nice to see the progress. Don't forget to cut out the vision slits on the conning tower and signal tower as this is easily forgotten. Will she be ready for Wicksteed/Jutland? Must build faster!! :-)

Cheers

Hi Geoff

She will be ready for Mayhem come rain or hell on water! Not stopping now I'm so close for initial paint work next weekend. I've been concentrating on the foremast again today and a lot of work getting the right one- Dreadnought had many refits and her masts always seem to change, luckily some pictures in Anatomy book show her in 1916 but annoyingly the drawings stop in 1913. Just fitted her director tower at the top of the foremast- I'm very happy so far. I've detailed the area around the lower conning tower so it isn't just see through but none glued in position to avoid complicated masking. Watch this space!

PS. I haven't forgotten the vision slits they are being added using decal sheet from Airfix!
