Great news. The Flying Scotsman is back!
« on: January 08, 2016, 08:38:10 am »

:-)) Great news today, the Flying Scotsman is back on track after 4.2 million pound rebuild and ten years hard work,in the 50s my dad worked on the railway,on our way to Scotland to see my aunt and uncle my dad managed to get me a ride on the footplate of this great loco, the noise, the heat, the vibrations, the smell, and the sheer power of the engine has stayed with me all my life and started my love of steam, people might say it is just a machine but I say it is a living, breathing, fire spouting monster that must be worshiped,my thanks and respect to all the people who made this possible, thanks guys.........Ray :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))

Since 1923 when she was built, I wonder has actually been spent on her in real terms?!
I would hazard, she is the most expensive loco, of any kind, in history!

What colour green did they paint it? Dark BR green or the traditional Apple Green? There was a huge outcry last time it was overhauled when it was painted the 'wrong' colour.

Good to hear that Flying Scotsman is back. Here she is on a gloomy day in 1988 piloting NSW Railways Class C38 No 3801 during her visit to Australia that year. The visit was part of the commemoration of 200 years since the First Fleet arrived in this country. Notice the people clambering up the embankment, and on to the locomotive footplate - "Elf" and safety would have multiple fits if that were to happen today. I had followed the train from Casino, in northern NSW, to this point where she stopped, probably because of a signal check.

Was it 3801 she didn't race with in Brisbane when they ran on parallel tracks?

At the moment she's still in the wartime black. I heard this was being changed after all the steam tests and runs are completed to BR green.

I'll try to see her and get some photos when she's doing the Surrey hills tour later in the year.

Can someone tell me if the Flying Scotsman was originally the name of the service, like the Orient Express, or the whole train, or just the locomotive? Was the train only ever pulled by that same loco?

The engine originally had a number but was subsequently given the name. Not sure about the train.

The name is the name of the service. It was a service between London and Edinburgh and was operated by many locomotives over its time and it's still going I believe with Virgin trains.

Yes, but it's also the name of the engine that broke the record. A bit confusing really.

Great days when so many of the train services had names, Atlantic Coast Express, Golden Arrow,The Cunarder etc.

Always been more of a Southern person myself.  %)

I have a pass at my local preserved railway that allows me to walk the line to take photos. Get some reasonable shots and it's quite an experience when a steam train passes you even if it's at only 20mph. Must have been incredible when they were doing 70 odd miles an hour.

I wasn't aware of a race, but FS may well have done some parallel running with 3801, although there's not a lot of standard gauge track in Queensland, where 3' 6'' is the ruling gauge. The two locos were on their way to Brisbane when I took the photo. Scotsman travelled extensively while in Australia, and even crossed the country from east to west and back.
