MV Rhum as Arranmore Ferry
« on: January 11, 2016, 01:30:11 pm »

HiThought I start my build blog.
I'm building the caledonion MacBrayne Mv RHUM
but I'm doing it as it is now in Arranmore ferrys, where it runs between Arranmore and Burtonport in the summer months.
The original plans are 1/48 I have up scaled to 1/35 it works out about 750mm long and 20 5 mm wide. It's the same plans as barriew used on his. I keep you updated with the build this will be my 2nd scratch built model .

Thanks Mark

Yes gives a build series or at least a couple of shots of full size Rhum in her new colours until your build begins.

so to start im making her out of Ply
so far i have cut the sides out and the bottom.
but having looked at more detailed photos the plans are quite different to the real boat, so undecided yet on what way to go as the rear end is a bit differnt,
i may just stick with the plans for now and in future make a sister to modifyed MV Rhum

i will try and update regularly

and Mickey thanks very much ill let you know

many thanks mark

so next step i have done is get the stern made and fixed in and sanded down

this wasnt to bad to do just a bit of filler and shes good

after i got that more or less right i started in the deck and bow sections. now this is where i went slightly wrong
the plans say for the bow section where it curves up from the side to be about 3 cm longer than i cut didn't rellise until after all clued together but i will leave it as i dont think it will make the look any different also the real boat doesn't seem as long as in the plans at the bow either,

thats it for now
i have ordered the prop shafts and the rudders so next is that to do,

thanks very much

Great start Mark, it never hurts to have a little excess as then you can cut back and make a tidy job of the join.

MV Raasay one of the Island Class calmac ferries like the Rhum, out of the water on the slip at Raasay, thought you might like the pic for under waterline detail

Great thanks very much for that wbeedie
notice the real boat has less of an angle near the props than the plans say, may have to modify that as Barrie had an issue with it not going in astern as there was no bit in the water.

but anyway bit of an update
have now built the stern up

Also the bow and got the car deck in,

trying to decided how to have the car deck mounted they say cut a centre section out but i want to have the whole section removable so its all 1 piece, so will experiment with that.

also have the motors in and propshfts

Hope to do some more tonight on the deck house etc,

thanks very much

Morning wbeedie........you say on the slip, but we cannot see any slipway hauling gear

We do however see the tide line, so do they motor up above the ramp, tie her off & wait for the tide to go out?

If this were the case would she not be sitting rather precariously  :embarrassed: at each high tide?... so underwater work would be of short duration between tides?......Derek

Hi Derek, no she was beached on the access slipway for maintainance, been on that ferry once or twice, not been on her replacement, one of the new green powered ferries,a fair bit of tide ran at the old slipway,

The photos are very handy as the plans are totally wrong  around the back of the wheel house. So a bit of modifications  is needed if I can

You're right. The wheelhouse is quite a bit different to the plans - which were only described as near scale. I realised this when I was building mine, but I had enough trouble with the wheelhouse as it was without trying to include the doors %)  You should find it easier at the larger size. If I remember rightly the plans show only one set of ventilators. I spotted that there were two in time to include them.

Hi Barrie
Yer to late for me as built the wheel house from the plans.
Don't really want to build another on so may just modify it
to suit. I started it before I found any decnt photos of the boat. But its ok I get round it.

Anyone going to ally pally at the weekend for the show ?/

Also Barrie can you see the angle if the but behind the probs in the photo on the slip compared to the plans. I know yours had trouble going astern. May have to mod it the same as the real one

A very comprehensive history of your fine build is here http://www.shipsofcalmac.co.uk/h_rhum.asp Mark, reminding me of a single trip I had on her to Rum via Mallaig, Eigg and Muck (with a couple of cows on board) many years ago.

Yes Mark - that is obviously the solution, and I think you could still do it before you get too far. I saw some other photos when I was building mine which appeared to show the angle more like the plans, but it could have been the angle from which the photos were taken. I think its too late now to modify mine. My two options are firstly 40mm props, and secondly try to set the prop shaft lower.
Its not a high priority at the moment.

So an update from over the weekend and last part of last week.

i have more or less finished the hull, rudders are in just waiting on a servo arm for the steering as i havnt got enough movment,
also motors mounted and all ok.

I have started on the Ramp and trying to figure out a nice hinge and gear to raise and lower it, struggling at the moment but have an idea so work in progress with that. the way i have the hinge is
to stiff so it wont fall down under its own weight so that needs looking at.

Have modified the wheel house to reflect the Prototype rather than the plans.
its basically the funnel base thats different. also started on the funnel, im using balsa wood for that as its easier to shape.

Thats the old bit as the plans its the far rear of the wheel hose thats differnt

and this is the new with the funnel in progress

thats about it for now while i figure out how to do the ramp.

Thanks very much
