What rank for captain of gunboat?
« on: September 19, 2017, 07:53:37 pm »

Having nearly finished a semi-scale Rendel gunboat, and finding some crew figures, I'd like to know what rank the captain of such a vessel would hold so that I don't give the figure too much gold braid. I'm thinking that it could be a lieutenant, as it was a small unimportant boat of little account, but am probably wrong. One of you experts can no-doubt tell me. Thank you.

Either a Lieutenant or a Commander at the highest end of the scale.
My insect class gunboat was captained by a Lt-Cmdr in 1920.

You are probably on the money with Lieutenant, have just finished reading a couple of books on WW1 small vessels, seems most of the TBD's and destroyers were commanded by Lieutenant Commanders with the Capt.D in a scout cruiser or a new  Destroyer leader with the deputies being Commandeers .

Thank you for that. I was going of my memory of the Hornblower books, even if they were the wrong period. Now I have to look up how many rings he'd have in the 1870s.
