There were times when I had to stop the car because I was laughing so much. His comedy timing alone was worth the price of the ticket. Who could forget his long-time correspondents Norma Snockers, Major Sir Gerry Pending and Rudolph Hucker?
Probably the best broadcaster in the history of broadcasting.

I wasn't a fan of his until one day I copped for the job of liaison lineman when his morning show was done as an outside broadcast from the Savoy at Blackpool (he was compere for the Miss UK that year).  I had not realized that his "script" was a list of the records to be played and a pile of "readers letters", all the chat was off the cuff, always humorous, never offensive and with a gentle whimsy that is probably irreplaceable.  And, unlike some BBC early morning presenters, he could read the time off a clock.  The world is a poorer place for his loss.

A true hero, stunning pilot and record holder extraordinaire. Last year I got a copy of his latest book, too close for comfort, and was truly amazed by his exploits. A real life Biggles and will be sadly missed.
RIP Winkle.

Hi all, what a guy!  Now and again he appears as comentary on aircraft documentaries on cable TV.  So down to earth and he reckons his small size saved his life a few times.
I love the story of when he was expelled from Germany as WW2 started.  The Nazis confiscated everything except his English sports car.  When he asked why everything else and not the car he was told, "No spares".

He made 97 after a life of adventure
Great guy.

A truly amazing life departs this world. It is very sad but I do hope that we don't need to see his like again! If we do, then we are in real trouble!

Winkle Brown - a true gentleman and fantastic flier who as a test pilot really took his life in his hands.
He was brilliant at explaining things that non-pilots could understand.
He must have had a great life and definitely the sort of person you would like to meet
RIP

I too was sad to hear of the death of Captain Eric 'Winkle' Brown. He was the Captain at RNAS Lossiemouth when I joined for basic Observer training in 1968, and I still have the picture when he presented me with my Wings at the end of the Buccaneer course in May 1969. I flew with him once in the Sea Prince during basic Observer training, him as a Captain and me as a Midshipman! I was glad to have known him.

RIP  Keith Emerson. 71
the lyrics to one of his songs "Lucky Man" may have been somewhat prophetic (final verse)....

 A bullet had found him
His blood ran as he cried
 No money could save him
So he laid down and he died

Ooooh, what a lucky man he was
Ooooh, what a lucky man he was

Aw shucks! Keith Emerson suicides.
I'll dig out some vinyl later; "Pictures at an Exhibition" was one I loved to play.

It seems to be a rapidly increasing list at the moment.

Today : R.I.P. Paul Daniels and Cliff Michelmore.

Does anybody remember when so many well known people have passed on in such a short time?
