I propose that at 00.01 am on January 1st 2017, we all agree to strike 2016 from the record and promise never to speak of it again!  :(( :(( :((

He will feel at home, surrounded in all the beauty of space and the stars, and the heavens, with God as his helmsman.

He was an incredibly brave man to sit on top of a giant fire cracker, and earned my respect for him as a young boy.

RIP, you giant of men, and enjoy your final voyage to glory.

I dearly hope that in the afterlife we can visit other systems and galaxies with ease so that we too can share in the wonder of the universe. I imagine Mr Glenn is already exploring and discovering things we will never see due to the vastness of the universe.

You are spot on Jim, what a brave act indeed. Rockets did and still can fail dramatically

Yes.....I wonder if Mr Glenn has met up with and now comparing notes with Mr Gargaran Gagarin......similar lives they chose to lead on our earth

A coin has two sides, yet has a singular value .........both very brave men and to be honoured.....

Thanks for the correction Mr Moderator...as we live in the Western world we hear little of those from the Eastern side....I do understand we were remembering John Glenn, however I considered Yuri would be a friend of John ....worlds apart by culture and race.......however their respective CV's would be very similar............. :-))

As an Aviator weather was part of my life, and some people managed to make it very, very boring. This could never be said of Ian. Regardless of how dull the news was there was always Ian to look forward to at the end.

At this time it is perhaps worth remembering Kisty Macoll who died, 18 December 2000 as a
result of a speedboat accident. One of her best known songs is relevant about now too....

It's not just the famous that are missed.  My dear friend and modeller Keith Brown died this morning after defiantly fighting cancer for 3 years without showing his suffering. He only made one model having seen my boats on our lake and asked me for advice. It took him over a year but he built a lovely Emma C. Berry schooner which sailed well. He said his build took his mind off his pain. I will miss him more than any 'name'.
Sleep well Keith.

The life that touched a few people touches deeper than the life that touched millions.

We at Bognor wargmaes club had a member that was terminally ill, and we arranged an Arnhem game so that he could set himself the goal of painting a Brigade of Paras and play in the game with them. Sadly the game was a memorial as he passed away a month before. Like with your friend Keith, it took his mind off things somewhat.

Those who are into full size sailing will need no reminding of the enormous impact made on the sport by Paul Elvstrom.  The Great Dane has died at 88 and leaves a vast legacy of advances in small boat sailing, not to mention four Olympic gold medals (1948, 1952, 1956, 1960) and countless other championship wins.  A great sportsman who gave a lot more than he took.  RIP

One of he Fleet Air Arm's finest who, like so many others of that era, just saw it as his duty and doing his job.
