Penguins sub from batman
« on: January 22, 2016, 03:50:21 am »

Right a couple of questions. What is the basic sub from the orginal batman series that penguin uses. It looks like a modified gato hull but I stand to be core ted. Also, a gentleman at work has asked me to do a feasibility study to see if one could be made. Scale is not a problem but control of it could be as there was no prop (substituted for flippers ) and no ruđder. The flippers  i have worked out but the rudder is a  different story

Been there done that. The fight scene is a mock up of a gato class. The model sub looks like a modified early u boat.  But the conning  and hull look to come from different types of u boat

I suspect that this is a 'made up' submarine - the film was from the mid '60s so there wasn't the internet or ample photos and plans available to the modellers back then - only 20 years after the war!

It looks a bit like a generic 'German sub'.

It's a Gato hull with a Type 7c conning tower, with what appears to be a shortened main deck. It could be quite easily made by kit bashing two 1:72 kits

I've an idea about propulsion etc, so I'll see you at work...

Propulsion was the easy part. It's the rudder that's the problem.

Oddly, I can't actually see a rudder in any pictures?

Maybe you could steer it with the same system as a flying wing flown by model flyers, they have no rudder or tail fin. You would need a good mixer on your radio with v tail mixing though. U2

It'd do beautiful barrel rolls {-)

Maybe a super sneaky split hinged rear section that opens either side of the hull to turn? You'd never see it on the water and you wouldn't notice the split out of water

I think you're all over-thinking this.

Still looks like a totally made-up sub with a conning tower stuck on.

It's a pretty low-budget film so they probably made the mechanism first and then invented a hull around it and then found a conning tower from a model sub that looked ok when glued on.

The sub in the fight scene was borrowed from another film. A lot of the I ternal scenes were rejigged from 20000 leagues under the sea. The model of the penguin sub was a hybrid model made very low budget from ex wwii movies. It just need identifying that's all

I think that is all I have on the Penguin sub. The model was a restoration of the studio model (so I was told).
Enjoy!
Peace,
Tom

I thought the Tower looks more like a Type II U-Boat.

The giveaway to me for a Type II tower is the radar in the front of the tower. The model is missing the piece, but the movie stills shows it.

Look at this:

There's a step down behind the conning tower on the movie sub. Quite pronounced.  Very similar to a vii d

Haha, who knows? I hope you do build this. It is a very unique movie sub and it looks like it can be rc'd. I have too many subs on my plate right now.
If you find anything else about this sub, please post!
