Brass paint
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:39:56 pm »

A while ago I saw some what I thought were very polished brass fairleads on a life boat, but they had been painted. I remember him saying that the paint took a fair time to dry, but that's all.
Sadly I can't ask him about it as he has away.

Wondered if anyone could throw some light on what this paint might have been.

Might be a paint manufacturer called Alclad, they specialise in metallic finishes and I believe one of them is brass. I've seen them used on aircraft model kits and can be polished but are usually airbrushed.

I've had some good results using Polykote Brass enamel (in a glass jar - not an aerosol spray).

Yup! Thanks a lot for that, E2V! 'Mr Metal' paints look interesting, though...

Thanks for the replies, a lot of information there.
I think it might have been Alclad as he was very good with an airbrush, as I don't have an airbrush I'll have to give Alclad a miss .
So I might give Dave's Polykote a go, although saying that, I am having trouble finding paint called Polykote on the internet.

Alclad is amazing stuff when properly applied. I have used various aluminium finishes and the chrome paint which really is mirror like when applied.

Here is a P-38 Lightning I built a few years ago. This was airbrushed in polished aluminium Alclad and it required a high gloss, black base coat. This was done with Humbrol enamel paint thinned a bit.

Next up was the polished aluminium which is airbrushed straight from the bottle. A little goes a long way as it doesn't require lots of coats, just a light dusting.

Off course no plane in service would have been that shiny so a bit of weathering was needed after.

It's well worth a try if you have an airbrush.

I can second Platikote Brass paint for brushing, but would add their Old Gold if you want a slightly more mellow effect - either instead of or as mix of the two. I bought mine from Wilko in Derby a good few years ago  %)

B & Q stock the entire Plasticote range of colours and coatings, Halfords stock a couple but not the entire range.
