Car carriers must be among the ugliest vessels afloat {:-{  My middle son worked for Wallenius Wilhelmsen (until they closed the Sydney office and sent all their IT work to Thailand <*<  ) and I used to tell him their ships looked like floating, featureless blocks of metal O0

If it is a "Pure car and vehicle carrier" what is it doing carrying timber and construction materials?

Probably because a lot of shipping is in dire straits at the moment and any cargo is better than no cargo and having to pay out huge sums to tie a ship in port. There are in UK ports at the moment over 100 anchor handlers tied up and crews laid off due to the price drop in oil. A report issued yesterday said that NO anchor handlers were working the North Sea fields at the moment, think about that! Supply ships yes, but rig movers no.

I'm not sure that they can guarantee that, having carried a load of cars one way, there will be a corresponding number of cars going the other way.  Rather than just ballast the box down, they might well carry something that pays.

It doesn't look like it is taking on water or sinking,  just a guess, it looks like whatever it is carrying has shifted due to bad weather.

This one is carrying a cargo of timber though.

Time for you chaps in France and Northern Spain to start thinking of building a new larger man cave, and only for the price of some petrol and nails.

And if the stern hits first, think big, get the ramp down and have a digger for the foundations for the new shed.

With four acres of what we call laughingly a garden, I could do with one. As it is we have to rely on a Salvador a local with his tractor, he'd due this weekend and charges 25€ an hour to plough 3 acres of it over for us. The other acre is after ten years of my hard graft a proper garden!

I remember when there was all that timber washed up on the kent coast and everyone was being warned off going and picking it up by the police. I know that quite a bit was scavenged, and that some people were prosecuted.

Along the Sussex coast too. I don't think that the timber was actually of any use though once it had been soaked in saltwater.

Why do you think that Colin?
In Nelson's time , for example, they had sea water pickling ponds for the timbers for his ship construction.

I rather like a bit of driftwood.

Have made a couple of knife handles from gorgeous driftwood I've picked up off the beach over the years. They look even better than the rare bits of wood one pays a fortune for.

Without getting too far off thread  :embarrassed:..... the timber on-board this vessel was reported as construction timber which could have been a quick growing specie & not really suitable for marine construction

It is also referenced that the timbers used in Nelsons time would have been oaken or and other old growth hard woods.....which had a weight or specific gravity approaching that where it didn't actually float <*<.... Derek
