As Derek says, it was sawn constructional timber which would have warped in water and thus was of no use for it's intended purpose.

Hi all, I have read in the past about pre-Nelson age ship construction and many ships were rotting 'down below' before they took to the water.

On the other hand we do not always get good quality wood even now.  Wood products, ply etc, is produced for a price, you have to pay for good quality.  I think ply comes in about 6 variants, I use Thames quality ply or more often Marine quality.

It seems wrong thinking to put lots of time into making something from old pallets because they are cheap.

The ship has now been towed in to Bilbao. She looks in a really precarious condition and I'm surprised she has not capsized. But what an ugty hull shape!

Regards to that soft wood not suitable for ship construction, the Yanks used it for ships working up North, though they only lasted about ten years, they still paid for themselves.

Surely it must have been a risk bringing her into port like that. What would have happened had she capsized in the harbour entrance?

What was the alternative?  Let it sink at sea or beach it as a probably terminal wreck?
If the salvors had managed to get their lines on it and tow it out of a Biscay storm, the chances of it suddenly foundering in calm sheltered water were probably judged slender enough to recover the vessel.

Malcolm, they adopted a different approach to the car carrier that suffered a similar problem in the Solent. The Port of Southampton wouldn't accept it until it had been stabilised so there was a very delicate reballasting exercise needed to bring it back almost upright. Of course the situation here could be different in that the earlier problem was incorrect ballasting but in this instance it appears that the cargo had shifted resulting is rather different stability problems and maybe there was no convenient sheltered water to undertake operations. However the ship has clearly taken on more water since the initial cargo shift, being noticeably down by the stern and with an increased list.

HI Colin, i agree, she is well down at the stern, but when you look at her rolling in the swell she comes back up quickly, some water must have entered the hull but she seems to be reasonably tight, can only be a slight influx, at that angle she should have taken on a lot of water.

The movement around 1:20 looks incredibly fast for a ship of this size. It looks more like a small model bobbling around or that the video was speeded up.

I thought it was speeded up too but the motion of the tug looks tolerably realistic.

As Jarvo says, the main hull must be well battened down, maybe it is free water entering the car decks above which is causing the extra list?

I would have thought that extra mass would slow the movement down.  I thought that the tug looked to be bobbling as well. Tugs are normally very well planted.

Could be the same problem as the one in the Solent not so long ago and that was caused by incorrect ballasting. These boats rely on their ballast tanks, any problem there and over they go, there are no cargo hatches only the rear door, but as she was carrying general cargo perhaps some of it was not secured properly and she shot some to one side which would have the same effect, with these boats you do have to be a lot more particular about stability and cargo securing than the old break bulk cargo boats.

I've been into that harbour many times aboard BrittanyFerries Cap Finisterre, its not a big place! The part they actually moved it into is the turning basin for the ferry which moors to the harbourside under those gas tanks. The main port is further up river, so I guess they are keeping it away from the main shipping.
