GLUES FOR FOAMBOARD
« on: February 01, 2016, 04:43:33 pm »

Has anyone any experience of gluing foam board?  I am about to assemble some and cannot find any trace of the suppliers recommended glue (STIX ALL).  Ideally one with a fairly short grab time?
Better confess, it will be a small model railway baseboard, but I know where the knowledge will be.

Not sure that it is specifically for foam board but I think Model Boat bits do something.

If it's PVC-faced board, I use the 'Poly-Pipe' plumber's plastic pipe glue from Screwfix or Wickes - fast grip/set and you can use it as a filler for small gaps betweein joints.

UHU POR is a foam safe contact adhesive, it glues all sorts of other stuff too.

Ok in the UK there are 2 types of foam board.
1. Card faced foam
2. A soft to medium density foam.
If 1 use any glue for paper
If 2 use poyweld/ polypipe
I use the gel version on 2

The people who make the foam board recommended Uhu Por.

 Hi rickles,
for model aircraft I've used UHU Por for many years on depron ( which is foamboard without a card facing) and it is the standard adhesive in aeromodelling circles, though it is best to avoid excess glue outside of the joint as it does not 'sand' well and can be pulled out of the joint.
A good adhesive to use is epoxy both fast and slow types are okay and will not dissolve the foam and produce a firmer joint. You can also use PVA to glue wooden parts to the card facing. Another foam safe adhesive ,but really only suitable for low strength joints is Copydex.

Another you can use on foam/foam, foam/wood and foam/card joins is NoMoreNails. It's certainly strong enough and the edge sands well if you do get it spreading out of the join. It's also relatively cheap if you need the volume of a cartridge.

Thank you all for your information.  I have now used UHU POR and it seems very effective.
Once again thanks.
