Using Hi-Build Filler/Primer Spray Paint as a Final finish
« on: February 02, 2016, 11:43:37 am »

Anybody got any experience of using hi-build filler/primer spray paint as a final finish ?

Just bought a can of Red Lead Oxide coloured paint to spray the hull of
a springer I am making - it looks good enough to use as the final coat but
will it stand up to use on the pond?

Perhaps Stavros may care to comment ??

I often use Halfords Red Plastic Primer for my hulls and finish with Humbrol Matt Cote or Satin cote to give a uniform finish with top of the hull. The only problem with a spray can is if it gets scratched you can't touch it up easily.

Actually, you can touch up small imperfections from a spray can if you are careful. You need a soft fine tipped brush then spray into a suitable container such as the top of the can, dip the brush into the liquid paint and quickly apply in one go, don't try to brush out as it dries too quickly and will leave brushmarks. It usually blends in pretty well.

I've always been told all primers was not water proof so need to be sealed, But as already been said the great man Stavros Will hopfuly but us right.

Read all about it in the tutorial bit that I have written in this section.

ALL PRIMER is NOT waterproof so you need to use some laquer to seal the wood then apply the primer....if it is a plastic or Grp hull then it doesn't matter as no water is getting though either substrates.

I've just been out and bought a spraycan of Humbrol Matt Enamel Varnish.

As soon as I have the final colour coats on the hull, and designed, made and
put on some decals for the boat name etc., I shall give it as many coats as the
spraycan will yield (at least 2-3 minimum).

Stavros/Dave : The hull is 5mm hard balsa with fibreglass cloth and epoxy resin inside and out
