JUTLAND
« on: February 05, 2016, 02:24:49 pm »

Its the 100th anniversary of Jutland on 31st May which works nicely with Wicksteed/Model Boat Mayhem in May.

Any plans to assemble as many Dreadnoughts as we can?

Might be good fun.

I hope to bring Iron Duke (1/96 scale) but as a fall back may have to clean up a very old model of Neptune also in 1/96 scale.

Cheers

Grand plan, everyone who has a WW1 era vessel, if possible something that was at Jutland, meet up at Wicksteed on the Saturday at Mayhem (28th I believe) to get as many Dreadnoughts and alike in one place for this amazing commemoration of this battle.
I don't know of anything else planned in the country for such an event but if we can get 10 or more models it'll be fantastic.

PS we do need both Royal Navy and Kaiserliche Marine!

The subject is crystalising on several topics including here http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,53116.0.html , here http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,53566.0.html and here http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,50752.msg543033.html#msg543033

The upshot is that this could be ab astounding spectacle what with the Kriegsmarine there as well. Geoff, it would be great if Neptune could attend as well as 'The Duke', it would add battleship coolness to the proceedings.

They're members of Wicksteed club and have said that if it's finished they'll display her on the water.
And I've seen the hull, what a beauty!

Okay, we are getting near to "coaling up time" for the Jutland, Wicksteed meet.

Iron Duke will certainly be there but I may not have everything functioning, we will have to see. So how many Dreadnoughts do we potentially have, maybe?

Iron Duke
Royal Oak
Dreadnought (being built)
Dreadnought (Ron Deans)
Agincourt (with a bit of luck)

Any others out there that can attend?

On another note Portsmouth Dockyard have just announced a Jutland exhibition.

Cheers

Agincourt depends but Ron Kingdons Bellerphron will be, and if Sheila comes too I've asked her to bring Superb.
I think Tony H is bringing Nassau and some escorts and Tony Newstead has some to choose from too- at least a couple of destroyers. :-))

If niggly little things like not having a proper marking gauge don't scupper progress then HMS Ready will be there even if she is grey and lacking in the finer details. Once I test her in the lake on Sunday I can weld down the deck supports and then get crackoing on the quarter deck and plating.

Much of the large details such as the bridge and torpedo tubes are mostly done and the guns were painted eons ago.

This is going to be very good, we just need to decide which day of the weekend we are all going to sail together for the big event.  :-))

Given that Portsmouth is doing a Jutland exhibition and the powers that be do seem to be recognising this historic battle I wonder if we can all convene on the Saturday whether the newspapers may be interested?

Good publicity for all and in particular our hobby.

I've had words with Wicksteed park management about media and they have a man who deals with that sort of thing but I'll gee them up and get our point across

Hope you are building HMS Australia! She would fit right in!

If we get 6 to 8 dreadnoughts together you can be sure of lots of pictures - maybe even a video or two on u-tube would be great.

Cheers

Definitely will be sailing both days for those attending for the weekend, if everyone is happy with the Saturday being the main big event with Sunday as the normal sailing of WW1 and pre dreadnought era vessels.
I'll get the park informed of the day so if they can get their media guy down to the lake.

Don't worry Derrick, we'll make sure there are plenty of pictures. :-))

I saw a TV programme over the weekend - Secret History - Jutland. In my view it was very mixed and if my memory is correct didn't mention Sheers second turn towards the British fleet and their massed torpedo attack and then Jellico's turn away. It just mentioned the one clash. It didn't mention the loss of Invincible and it didn't mention that the German battleship Pommern blew up in the night fighting. I know programmes are time conscious but these three events were material.

I also went to see the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich) Jutland display. This was quite good if very small. The center piece being the model of Queen Mary which was displayed in a very dark room? Why do they insist on doing this? (Chatham is the same). The computer graphics of the battle were quite well done but other than a few paintings and flags there were very few pictures of the main protagonist fleets. Candidly a little disappointing particularly given the huge amount of wasted space at Greenwich.
