Do you know if she was successfully refloated? The "Pasha Bulker" created quite a stir here recently when she was washed ashore on a beach in Newcastle NSW, during a wild storm. She sat there for nearly 3 weeks, causing a sand spit to form near her, until she was finally pulled free on the 3rd attempt by 3 tugs. She suffered some creasing to her hull, and after some temporary patching, was towed to SE Asia for repairs. I think her master was in a great deal of trouble, as all ships waiting to load off Newcastle were advised to move further out to sea, but he ignored the advice. He had also pumped out the ballast water, with the result that her prop kept coming clear of the water in the rough seas, and she could not make headway against the gale force winds. A couple of photos off the Internet are attached.

A bulker with no cargo or ballast actually has very little draught.  A combination of a high tide in an area that has a large tidal range and she could be easily left high and dry when the tide goes out.  Additional problems are generated by removing the ballast as you present a very high sail area combined with little draught and an inefficient propeller so you completely put yourself at the mercy of the wind.

This is a very big human error by someone who should have known better.

Can you imagine being at home watching telly during a storm, and you see this thing drifting towards your hut? :-\

Martin, it's big all right, according to one report 76741 tonnes deadweight, although other reports say 40000 tonnes - maybe that is displacement, I'm not too sure on how ship weights are measured. It is about 250 metres long, so yes, it's a big ship. They were lucky to be able to refloat her. Back in 1974 a 53000 tonne Norwegian bulk carrier called Sygna was washed up onto Stockton Beach, just a few miles north of where the Pasha Bulker grounded, and what's left of it is still there.

Strange perspective on Martin's photo, when I first looked at it I thought it was two separate pictures, very spectacular !
As Bunkerbarge says, a bulker flying totally light is something akin to a kiddies football on a lake, no chance in a blow. The big car carriers must also have the same problem, I know they a restricted on movement in most ports over certain wind strengths.
