What can I build that's under 22" long?
« on: February 11, 2016, 06:22:14 pm »

I really do enjoy sailing my Springers, but I'm hankering after something with a more conventional hull, so probably a tug or workboat of some kind.   It has to be

a.  No more than 22" long overall (due to transport limitations)

b.  Relatively straightforward to build

c.  Fun to sail

But I'm stuck for ideas, mainly because of the length requirement.  Any suggestions, please chaps?

I can recommend John's suggestion of the Swordsman, I run one on a 1000kv brushless,  2s 4000mah lipo which gives me around 40 mins run time & it only ever goes flat out !!  Easy to build & fun to drive.

If you are looking for a tug, then this is good. Hard chine hull & simple balsa construction & the possibility to add as much detail as you wish

I took a look at the Model Boats magazine 2015 special edition and found these Vic Smeed designs still readily available and within your size requirement. Tiddler has already been suggested.
If you fancy a Clyde Puffer as suggested above, Lochinvar at 17" long -

Some other suggestions -
Australian tug Yarra at 22"

At 18", tug Bustler -

At 21", motor vessel Silver Mist -

At 21", cabin cruiser Moonmist -
http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/product/16677/moonmist-mm610
At 20", the recently updated Twinkler design -

If you don't mind going up to 22.5" Customs and Excise Launch Guardsman, hull also available -

Guardsman by Vic Smeed, nice little custom and excise launch. Can be scratchbuilt from plans or a vac formed hull was available.

This was the first boat I scratchbuilt. It makes a beautiful little model and is so simple to build. I was even taking it to work when I was on nights (sat on a very quiet telephone switchboard) and doing it to pass the boredom.

If you would prefer a kit I would highly recommend the new Dean's compact kits.  Most are under 22 inches, and generally 90 to 125 quid.  Everything from tugs to fishing boats, warships to launches.
I have seen HMS Bronnington on the water at our club, and she is really superb.

How strange. I thought they had discontinued the 30" version, only to replace it with this smaller one. http://midwestproducts.com/products/maine-lobster-boat
I see however from Midwest's website that both versions appear to be available. http://midwestproducts.com/products/boothbay-lobsterboat
The larger one is possibly the finest wooden kit I have ever built.

A Vintage Model Boat Company  "Wavemaster 25"  Easy to build and customise and  really great on the water.  I've had hours of fun out of mine.  They get "up on the plane" even with a depleted battery.  It's also a vintage classic design which you can take to Vintage Model Boat Shows.

Well, I shall be checking out all those ASAP, so thanks once again chaps.  I doubt very much I'd have found those without your help.

Just a couple of points I should have made clear.  One is that I'm into slow-speed sailing on a relatively small pond, and t'other is that it doesn't have to be scale (or indeed prototypical if it's fun to sail).

The 22" limit is a definite limit, by the way, on account of anything longer simply won't fit into my Boat Transport Module a.k.a. the plastic crate on the trailer behind my bike ...

I would recommend Twinkler - MM2102 its a nice little 20in boat that is easy to build and now has the benefit of an easy to follow building article in MB magazine written by Dave 'The Bear' Milbourn.

oh btw Wavemaster 25 is longer than 22in....the clue is in the name

The mooring tug?

Thank you for that, Umi.  Looks lovely and just the right size but unfortunately well out of my price range  {:-{

Rich, read the op again, he wants something different to his 'springers', the 'MotorFlote' is not that different.  :-)

Still investigating those ideas (and a few others kindly suggested to me) and one that's a strong contender at the moment is that Vic Smeed Tiddler.  I'm a bit surprised that there seems to be very little about it on the web by way of build blogs or indeed mentions on forums, so  - am I doing the wrong searches, or is there perhaps a reason why it doesn't seem to be a popular build?

By no means finished, but here is a current blog of a 1.5x scale Tiddler.  http://www.modelboats.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=102309&p=3
