Technical assistance needed - Carson Reflex Pro radio
« on: February 13, 2016, 08:31:05 pm »

I've just bought a new radio and a couple of receivers, one of which is going into the MotorFlote...radio is a Carson Reflex Pro 14, four proportional controls, five via on/off switches and five more via on/off/on switches.

In the book of words it says it's not recommended to feed the rx with more than 8.4v...the 'Flote has a 12v x 2200a/h niMh pack, so a problem rears its ugly head.

Question:
Is there a way of getting 8.4v to the rx?
If it helps, the esc is an Mtroniks Viper 15, Futaba 3003 servo for the rudder, one micro servo operating a microswitch for the nav lights, a Turnigy electronic switcher for the spotlamp and maybe another for a flashing beacon if I decide to fit one.

You do not want to provide the Rx with 8.4V. The rest of the electronics will be for a maximum of 6V so if the esc has a bec this will provide the correct voltage. If not then a separate BEC will be needed or a 4 or 5 cell NiMH supply will be needed.
The 8.4 V given is the maximum voltage for those who want to use High voltage servos and electronics not the voltage you need to use, normal voltages will work OK. A Futaba 3003 will not last long at 8.4V.

Aha...so, if the esc has a BEC built in (which it has) I don't have to worry? Is that correct?

:-)) Richard you can use a Tornigy voltage reducer which will give you a choice of 5 or 6 volts,I have a couple in my boats which feed Rx from a 11.1 v lipo's with no problems, cost about a fiver, you can use on any battery up to 42v......Ray :-))

or as I recommended on another thread ....

A UBEC switchable for 5 volt or 6 volt operation and supplying 3 Amps

look at the following ....

http://www.banggood.com/Hobbywing-3A-UBEC-5V-6V-Switch-Mode-BEC-For-RC-Models-p-915037.html

90 reviews from purchasers and scoring 4.8 out of 5

Just to emphasise that when the speed controller does have BEC (like the Viper 15) you mustn't also fit a separate one. If your installation requires significantly more than 1A for the servos etc then it's advisable to disable the BEC in the ESC (by removing the Red wire from the 3-pin plug) and then use either one of the aforementioned units or a separate Rx battery pack.
