Micro LEDs
« on: February 17, 2016, 10:20:59 pm »

Hi Guys,

Thought I would share some photos of these micro leds that just arrived, I bought these for the refit I am planning on my Yorkshireman tug, to get the numerous bulkhead lights working on the superstructure.

Purchased from eBay, these things are insanely small - eBay:151750122686 [0402 SMD LED pre soldered with inline resistor]

I plan to drill out the moulded lens of the bulkhead light, replace it with a frosted piece of acrylic rod, to act as the right size lens and then mount the led behind. I would be interested to know how other people have tackled this problem in the past.

If you think that ebayer's mains led-lamps are cheap, the going rate is five for a tenner in 2016.

The way you describe it makes it appear you are not limited to the 0402 size. (1 x 0.5mm)
If you are prepared to add resistors and go up to 0603 size, high brightness ones are currently in stock at next day from Rapid http://www.rapidonline.com/electronic-components/truopto-0603-smd-led-single-chip-super-high-brightness-551200 Free next day post on £30+ orders.

The usual component suppliers such as Farnell and RS will do leds and there will be Chinese ebayers with prewired.

Someone who has done 1 watt leds with fibre optics will chip in.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments, Skmmer Fan, I completely forgotten about Component Shop, had a look at their website and they have some interesting LEDs for sale, bit pricey at £1.20 each, when I paid £7 for a bag of twenty, but I did have to wait ages for delivery from China.

I have 20 or so of the smd's in that size. If you can get them pre wired do so, they are the absolute pits to clamp and solder wire to. I gave up after 6.

Agreed, unless you have the patience of a saint and the manual dexterity of a world class neurosurgeon then there will be tears before bedtime
