Anyone here able to fabricate Aluminium?
« on: February 18, 2016, 10:01:53 pm »

I want to do some mods to a Vintage RC car and was wondering if anyone here is able to do some fab work in aluminium tubing?

Basically I would like the 2 roll cage sections fabricated in Aluminium. I can supply the actual parts as templates
Anyone up for the challenge?

1. Draw it in CAD.
2. Send it to Shapeways, where it can be direct 3D printed in aluminum:
https://www.shapeways.com/materials/aluminum?li=nav

3. or have it made in brass via their lost-wax process:
https://www.shapeways.com/materials/brass?li=nav

Pricey either way... but if a competent (and sane) aluminum fabricator were to take on the job, it might be even more!

There are challenges and challenges and that sir, is a big ask.
Something as small and complicated as that would be very difficult to weld.
3D is probably the only option and I suspect eye wateringly expensive {:-{

I've decided to shelve the idea for now :( I did have a response back from someone on another forum who would do the work for me, but would have to factor in making up the Jigs as well.

Worked out to be rather expensive, so I tried to generate some interest in a group buy but even then the cost was prohibitive for most people

Thanks for the responses people, but I think this is now dead in the water
