having trouble posting with photos.......just keeps deleating the post.

I have two sets of motors that i hope will power my 51" model lifeboat and was hoping for any advice as to whether eiother pair will power such a big boat.

The first pair are JOHNSON HC 970 Series. I cannot see the input range on them but would imagin that they are at least capable of 12v input

The second set  although physically smaller are BUHLER MOTORS and are rated at 12 - 18 volt input.

Or would i be better getting some other matching motors.........if so would the 800's do the job.

Johnson 970 motors came in two configurations, a high speed, 10000 rpm and a low speed 5000 rpm( speeds approx). The low speed version has sufficient torque to swing a 2 1/2" wheel. The High speed version has very little torque. I would instantly rule out the high speed version (ask me how I know). I have used the "low" speed version in many models and like them very much.
The Buhler motors are sweet. I installed a pair of 24volt ones in my 11' cruiser and she runs very nice. The Buhlers, at a higher voltage, 18-24 v, probably draw less current than the Johnsons, but not knowing the model#, nor having the specifications it is hard to tell. My 24 v mototors draw amps in the low single digits underway.
You could tach out each of the motors ,and measure the current draw at the same time using a digital tach (know any RC airplane fliers) and use a multimeter to measure your current. Remember to load your motors somewhat to get a more realistic idea of current draw while running.

thanks for your very informative info on the two types of motors Akira, and it rules ouit the Johnson motors immediately.
the reason being that one of them runs very fast on the 12v battery that i tested them, and the other of the pair runs at about half the speed that the other runs by.............so it seems that i have one of each that you have described.

I was given them some years ago so have never used them before.
I shal use the two Buhlers as i have always had good results with smaller Buhler motors on smaller boats.
Thank you so much for your info and advise. cheers.
