Hi Barry,

I was a little underwhelmed by the product for the price! - just my opinion

Best to remember that anything intended for use on model railways is pretty much by definition likely to be inside the same room as the person hearing it.  This is not usually the case with model boats.  What is a perfectly satisfying railway sound in the same room is likely to be completely lost out of doors on a lake with the rest of the world soaking up your sound and trying to drown it out with background noise.

Go with Action( Noisy Thing ) with the 15watt amp for boats.

To clarify, I'm not looking for engine sounds but a steam yacht whistle. The Action whistle (P29) is fine if you have a Lusitania or Queen Mary but sounds silly on a small steam vessel. All recommendations welcome.

PS. What's this P110 that keeps being whispered in the wings?

How many times has it been said that ships more than a few hundred
yards away are pretty well silent to the shore observer.
Why the h should you put a wheezing sounder in a model
send it out of audible range , bring it in , sit it on the stand
and leave the sound unit running.
My whinge for today.
Just seen Barry's post.
Steam yachts were almost silent.

There's a little gizmo on it called a preset pot. If you stick a screwdriver into it and tweak it you can make it sound like anything from a post-curry trouser episode to a bat screaming. http://action-electronics.co.uk/pdfs/P29.pdf
Trust me - I used to make 'em.
P110? I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.  8)

Dave,
Whisper it but I've got a P29 and I know where the preset pot is! At one end of the range it sounds like the Queen Mary and at the other it's the Harbourmaster's (diesel) launch. Unfortunately, nowhere in between does it sound like a steam yacht whistle.

Now, while nobody's listening, spill the beans on this 110 gizmo and I promise not to tell anybody else, OK?

I have one of those Modelsounds units in my tug boat and it's really quite good.
It does nothing but play the MP3 file on the SD card but for a steam tug that just needs to chug away it's fine. Pretty loud too and fairly small with no wiring, speakers, power supply, amps etc...

I have two sounds for it on the same SD card and you can switch between them using a button on the side. One is just a steam engine sound and the other is the same sound with the occasional steam horn thrown in.

Read the last paragraph of the FAQ page on the link.   http://www.modelsounds.co.uk/faq.html It tells you everything you need to know about using it as a steam whistle.

£30 pounds >>:-( >>:-(  if go go to Ebay and search extra bass speaker they come in at £4.99 + free delivery O0 , in another listing  there is also a pre loaded sound card with around 8 different sounds to choose from including a steamer, £7.99 + £0.99 delivery.

Total cost about 14 quid.

Post curry trouser episode.....Haha, love that.  Half the old farts at boat clubs I've been to are doing them for real, including the follow-through!

Then go for it, sir. No-one is stopping you. We found an identical unit to the original Model Sounds one on a Chinese website for $7USD, but you can always find stuff at silly prices in places like that. The gamble is in getting what you ordered in good working order, with instructions which you can understand.

I agree you can always find the same rubbish cheaper over HK way, just goes to show what a little searching can reveal. I was actually addressing the fact that some model shops do charge astronomical amounts for the very same HK rubbish.

In this case my friend has one and it delivers very good replica sound, he has the cat marine engine which sounds great in his tug. but as the dragons say "at £30 dabbs Im out"

I have a Model Sounds Unit in my Highlander Puffer. I have the 'Large boat single screw with Foghorn' and it is brilliant. It runs for at least 1 Hr before becoming a bit intermittent. My colleague has the same set up in his Ben Ain Coaster. Mini SD Cards are readily available from PC World and there are several libraries of sounds that can be downloaded free. I found a great one for my Paddler. The unit is easy to fit and also easy to swap from one model to another.

The only disadvantage is that it needs to be recharged from a USB connection after use. £30? You get what you pay for, and this has lasted several years so far, at least 3 possibly 4.

Go to Action , P100 you can program any effect you want ( you  just need the CD it,s a fiver) great sound , or if you can find a JJC module they are good with a Maplin amp. But if want plug and play then Action is the place.
