Kyosho Jetstream 800 EP Restoration help
« on: March 17, 2016, 08:00:25 pm »

Hi guys,

I today have picked up my first R/C Boat.

From my limited Googling its a mid 80-90's Boat which seem to get reasonably good reviews.

I bought it locally, here are some pictures as it stands now:

I would like to know what ESC and Brushless Motor would be recommended to upgrade it to some modern electrics.

As I understand it, I need a fairly beefy ESC around 80+Amps and a low kV rating brushless motor around 1300kv? Ideally i'd like to run it on 4S LiPo (Purely because I have two laying around from 1/8 Scale Truggy I recently sold.

The motor mount is capable of twin motors, however I think single brushless motor with good ESC would be more than enough?

To get it running just now I believe it just needs radio gear and the old NiCd battery charging. What is the current MSC(?) capable of running voltage wise does anyone know?
I don't know the mAh rating the NiCd battery, but its 6 cell. I have a spare NiMh 6 cell, 2S and 3 LiPo as well as the 2 x 4S LiPo previously mentioned but I don't want to connect them up just now in case I break something!

Thanks

Its my first boat so we will see how I get on with it.

I am new to boats so I am trying to increase my knowledge and understanding of them.

The lemans 360S in there is actually a 540 sized RC buggy motor. The 360 relates to the class of motor. Its meant for 6 min Buggy heats.

This means any RC car brushless will be a direct fit.... This gives you a massive choice of power and cost
I have a brushless setup that would work lovely on that :)

So I could drop in a say a 80-120amp ESC and a suitable kv motor and all be good?

I'm looking for a 2.4ghz radio system too.

Do I need to worry about what prop it has?

What setup might you have for sale?

Yep

Son and I race RC cars so we have a selection from mild to insane

I think a setup like this one will do you proud in that

I've ordered a 2 channel 2.4ghz radio system so once that arrives I can test power up the boat.

What sort of kv rating amp would be about right for this boat?

A straight bolt in brushless motor is the Hobbyking is the 3639-1100kv on 3S Lipo or the 3648-1450kv on 3S (fast) or an 4S (insane).
I use the Hobbyking 60A car ESC and a 40 prop.

HI Canabus,

Thank you for the help.

Is there a general rule of thumb to follow to know what kv rating motor I need? I understand using more volts requires a lower kv motor, (for a given target rpm) but is there a ball park figure to know what kind of kv/rpm to be aiming for as some people on YouTube are running 3800kv motors on 2s

I put a 2400kv 550 watt motor on 3S in a old dune buggy(MY FIRST BRUSHLESS MOTOR) total insane!!!
So for the boat I ask the club boys for some info.
So I start with the 3639-1100 on 3S and up to the 3648-1450 on 4S.
The boat is a Off Shore racer, the original motor was a geared 540 brush on Nicads(speed of a tug boat and 10 minute run time).

Derka what you need to remember is on fast boats the ideal rpm range is around 30 k rpm,so match the kv and cells so you get your 30 k that should give you a good fast safe setup. Personally id go with 4 s and  2200 kv ish that gets you close to your 30 k loaded rpm and just over unloaded so should be a safe setup but prop size plays a big part too you dont want to over load things with a big prop something around 37 mm ish should work ok.My only question is will that drive shaft and  coupling handle the power, personally i hate union joints i prefer flex shafts,id rip that thing out and go with a decent hardware package of stinger drive and seperate rudder and exit the drive shaft out the transom but thats me.Heres a pic of my 32" Tomahawk hull fitted with a strudder system that has an offset rudder, works well .
Heres a handy tool, to have to check your chosen setup before buying.

this motor should work in that small boat.but dont forget you need a water cooling jacket for it.

martno1fan  :-))

Thank you for the this valuable information, I feel a pain as im all new to boat stuff so please bare with me and silly questions!

Do you think it would be a worthwhile investment adding a flex shaft/stinger (I don't fully understand what these are or how to they fit but understand the weakness of the U-Joint) to this old boat?
I am perhaps thinking (Pending its mayden voyage on stock electrics) that a more tame brushless setup would be less stressful on the U-Joint. I guess I could do this by aiming 20,000-25,000 rpm instead?

I don't want a super fast boat (it may be perfectly fine stock for what it is) but just more modern electrics.
Maybe even staying with a brushed ESC and slighter faster brushed motor?
Once my radio gear arrives I can test her out.

Yes your probably right try it as it is and see what you think and get the hang of how it handles then when you get bored think about buying another boat either rtr or have a go at building one up from a  bare hull.
In case you didnt know there are some decent rtr packages available on the hobbyking site in the UK warehouse that would out perform your boat and theyre pretty cheap although the hulls are only abs.
As everyone knows i build fiberglass hulls so if you ever decide to have a go at building at a later date let me know.
Its pretty straight forward to build your own once you have the parts needed and i and others would gladly help you there.
Mart

heres a cpl decent starter packages ,not bad little performers for the money either.

Those two Hobbyking boats look the business.

I think my money would be better spent on one of them rather then potentially sinking £60+ upwards on this boat for electrics and props only to find it breaks.

Thanks once again :)

Boat building sounds complicated, I think I may even look at some slower scale stuff too

For a starter boat theyre hard to beat for the money, you can always upgrade the motor and esc later.Only negative for me is the abs hull but for what they are theyre pretty good value.

Building your own starting with a bare hull isnt as hard as you think ,the hardest thing is choosing the right gear to go into the chosen hull .

Thats what makes these forums so good though as theres a wealth of experience on hand for people like you .

For those boats i linked check out rcgroups forum as they have threads for those boats with lots of info.

You might be surprised what you might get for the boat as it is if you stick it on Ebay. The Kyosho Jetstream seems to be a bit iconic and they seem to fetch a lot for what they are.

If you raised a reasonable amount, you could look at one of the RTRs on Hobbyking

A little update.

Turns out the original Kyosho MSC is dead. Can it re-furbished, keep it for originality sake or just bin it?

Ive popped in my spare Hobbywing 1060 ESC and the boat is alive.

I now have prop spinning forward and reverse along with rudder control.

Hoping to get out at the weekend with it for the maiden voyage.

The U-Joint certainly seems a weak point and its quite noisy, although I have no other boats to compare this this.

I've had to back off the steering dual rate from 100% to about 25-30% as anymore really stresses that U-Joint

Managed to get out today.

Ran into massive over heating issues unfortunately so I'm not sure where to go now.

Was running a 60 amp ESC and an Axial 27T motor.
On 2s the motor was quite warm and 3s for 45 seconds was super hot, ie smoking!

I've re measured the fitted prop and it's about 50mm diameter which I believe is far too big?! Maybe that's the cause of over heating?

That's a  MASSIVE prop using a high kv motor, you need something much smaller 36 38 mm maybe 40 -42 mm but no bigger. Most def the cause for over heating im surprised something didn't fry lol ,is it water cooled ? if so did you have good water flow.

I've put on the stock (I assume) 40mm red nylon plastic prop on and adjusted those trim tabs up so the boat may get out the water a bit more and reduce drag.

Unfortunately the damage has been done to the motor and this time the motor could not get up to speed.

I'm thinking it would not be cost effective going direct drive and adding a water cooled brushless system (unless you have those things laying around)

I think I'll probably sell the hull as is and buy something modern like the Joysways Bullet V2 which is very similar to the Hobbyking V Hull offshore boat.

The Hobbyking ones are indeed cheaper. About £110 plus shipping £12, plus radio gear £22 and then LiPo batts.

The Joysways one in my local shop comes with batts for £169.

It's a shame you have to run two batteries as I have two 4S LiPo but couldn't run them as the boats would be un balanced with one 4S battery
